the oldest intact synagogue in
Boston.
We admire it from the out-
side, for the synagogue is now
closed and we can't go in,
though a committee is lobby-
ing to open it for tours. From
the outside, it's a modest,
graceful brick building with a
circular window with the Star
of David.
It will always look like this
because it's been designated
a Boston religious landmark.
"So its exterior is protected
from any change by the Land-
marks Commission," Ms.
Eidelman says.
The Charles River Park
Synagogue, not far from the
Vilna Shul, is quite a con-
trast: a modern synagogue
built in the 1950s as part of
Boston's urban renewal, and
the only active synagogue
now in Boston proper. The
others are in nearby suburbs
and towns.
Not far away is the Boston
Public Library, the nation's
oldest. Besides its extensive
collection of books, it also has
a mural by John Singer
Sargent that became part of
Boston's Jewish history when
it provoked sharp controversy.
As we head for the third
floor — reserved entirely for
the mural — Ms. Eidelman
explains how the mural titl-
ed Judaism and Christianity
stirred protest when it was
first displayed in 1919.
"It created an uproar in the
Jewish community," Ms.
Eidelman says, as we ap-
proach the mural which Mr.
Sargent spent 30 years
designing. The two religions
are depicted on two opposite
ends of the mural. On the side
representing Judaism, Moses
holds the tablets, and the pro-
phets' names are written in
English and Hebrew.
But it also depicts a blind-
ed woman with a fallen
crown, clutching the tablets
while she sits amid the ruins.
This figure symbolically
represents Judaism —
defeated by Christianity,
which is represented on the
other side of the wall as a
proud young woman in regal
splendor.
When the mural was un-
veiled, the Jews of Boston pro-
tested vigorously that it was
objectionable and anti-
Semitic, Ms.Eidelman says.
The Jews even circulated a
petition to the mayor and the
trustees of the library,
demanding its removal.
Finally, we visit the place
which is now the Jewish
heart of Boston, even though
it's technically not in Boston
proper. Just a few miles and
a quick trolley ride from
downtown Boston is Brook-
line. ❑
