Steven Moss Jay Zemmol 356-3307 84 FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1991 Ceramic Works At Swidler Gallery Arts Guild Sale In Ann Arbor Swidler Gallery will host exhibitions of recent gestural earthenware platters and vessels by Ann Arbor artist, Susanne Stephenson and a series of stoneware teapots, vases and bowls by John Nee- ly. The exhibition will run through May 25. Susanne Stephenson's re- cent ceramic work continues to make color synonymous with form as clay, decorating slips and glazes wrap the vessels' hollow interior. Her imagery captures the energy of the artist and records an impression of land/seascapes viewed during travels. Susanne Stephenson, who will retire this year as pro- fessor of art, Eastern Michigan University, studied at Carnegie Mellon Universi- ty where she received her BFA in 1957 and at Cran- brook Academy of Art taking her MFA in 1960. In this ex- hibition, Ms. Stephenson will include a series of new twisting bowl-like forms. John Neely's utilitarian pottery projects the serenity of the Japanese aesthetic while retaining strong American roots. His wheel- thrown pots are accented by a controlled surface of salt and wood atmospheric firing. These surfaces are not only visually enticing, they also of- fer a tactile surface not often associated with contemporary American pottery. John Neely, associate pro- fessor, University of Utah, studied at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University taking his BFA in 1975 and at Ohio State University receiving his MFA in 1982. Swidler Gallery is located at 308 West Fourth Street in the Washington Square-Plaza in downtown Royal Oak. Gallery hours are Tuesday- Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and by appointment.
