GLASS & PLASTICS
our younger generations
must never stop learning.
In my Without Malice I
was very optimistic when I
commenced my prophecy by
stating:
The conservative Eng-
lish-Jewish press, now 200
years old, looks back
serenely to its birth. Some
instruments of our age are
hoary. But our beard
hasn't even begun to
sprout. There is in-
destructibility in age:
hasn't the Psalmist pro-
claimed, "for a thousand
years in thy sight are but
as yesterday ..." It is no
wonder, then, that what
we experience today we
have already experi-
enced; that our trials and
tribulations also were the
challenges of yesteryears;
that history repeats itself.
Yet this is a good age. It
is an age in which we can
look back, calmly, upon
repeating events, upon
plagues that were over-
come by mankind. The
basic ideals of Man sur-
vived the loathsome and
offensive elements of life.
In our land, the traditions
of freedom and democ-
racy triumphed over the
threats that came from
bigots. The genius of
MAY SPECIAL!
America emerged as the
guide for the world.
It is proper to think of
these things as we
observe the 200th an-
niversary of a press,
published for Jews, in the
spirit of our Prophets and
of America, and to look
back a hundred years to
the days when men and
women everywhere were
in jitters. With our
neighbors, we have sur-
vived many things. We
have seen the rise and fall
of the Know-Nothing
movement, the Ku Klux
Klan, the Fascists, the
America Firsters, the ex-
tremists in bigotry.
It is evident that the op-
timism of three decades ago
has not prevailed. It has de-
teriorated. The new realism
comes to us with sadness.
The years ahead demand re-
vised studies and more
positive dedications.
Commitments such as are
now being outlined in a pro-
posed archives for the pres-
ervation of the vital in Jew-
ish existence may be helpful.
May there be no hesitation
in our striving in Jewish
commitments leading to in-
destructibility of faith and
idealism.
Youth Should Lead
New Jewish Archives
I
n my lifetime commit-
ment to archives, there
has been a privileged
association with the
historians on a national
scale and supporters in our
community. Nationally,
American Jewish Archives
are vital as guidelines. Their
leaders, Dr. Jacob R. Marcus
and Dr. Abraham Peck, give
us the encouragement and
commendations we value
and appreciate. The local

leadership has much to learn
from the pioneering leader-
ship.
There are many of the ear-
ly participants who should
have been mentioned at the
establishment of the ar-
chives. Abraham Rogoff,
Emma Shaver, Esther LaM-
ed, Harry August and
George Stutz, among others,
represent families with
backgrounds emphasizing
preservation of historical
records. This is where the
leadership of Gilbert Bor-
man plays a role.
To Mr. Borman, as presi-
dent of the Michigan Jewish
Historical Society, I offer a
bit of wisdom from Benjamin
Disraeli. He once wrote,
"Almost everything that is
great has been done by
youth."
There is much to en-
courage Gilbert Borman to
strive for the success of our
archives. It must become
great, functioning and Jew-
ishly motivated —in all
respects Jewish academia. It
must be made available in
the heart of the Jewish
community, hopefully in the
new Jewish Federation
building.
There is much more to our
combined Jewish duties. We
must learn to make our
youth our leaders. If we do
not enroll our youth in our
work with great interest and
devotion, we will not fully
succeed. Such is our duty.
