Israel Races To Help Ethiopians Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israeli Embassy in Addis Ababa is racing against time to prepare visas for about 17,000 Ethiopian Jews waiting to leave the country for Israel. Israeli officials believe President Mengistu Haile Mariam's regime will soon topple following his army's heavy losses in recent weeks to rebel forces. The rebels have captured the town of Ambo, 75 miles from Addis Ababa, and are reported closing in on the capital. They are already said to control half the coun- try. There is no telling how a rebel victory would affect the departure of the coun- try's remaining Jews, or E- thiopia's relations with Israel. Israel's Foreign Ministry has already called home most of its embassy staff and Jewish Agency emissaries. It has ordered Israeli citizens whose presence there is not essential to leave Ethiopia immediately. Despite the turmoil, Ethi- opian aliyah continues at its normal rate, according to Jewish Agency sources. They expect about 250 im- migrants to arrive in Israel this week. The flow of Ethiopian Jews has been between 500 and 1,000 a month since January. There was a two- week interruption in March, attributed to an attempt by President Mengistu to extract more weapons from Israel, though the Foreign Ministry and Ethiopian au- thorities denied the allega- tion. The Israeli daily Yediot Achronot said last week that Washington was ready to offer President Mengistu po- litical asylum in exchange for speeding up the depar- ture of all Jews. The White House an- nounced April 24 that Presi- dent Bush was sending Rudy Boschwitz, a former Repub- lican senator from Min- nesota, to Addis Ababa as his "personal emissary." Mr. Boschwitz, accom- panied by three administra- tion officials, arrived in Addis Ababa last weekend. According to the White House, his mission was to discuss with President Mengistu the plight of Ethi- opian Jews and possible solutions to the country's quarter-century-old civil war. „ , 4::?::•'.4%. • A. . .......... :110110.,, .7: Overstocked—Must Move Out CHROMETRICS MANY STYLES AND DESIGNS CARPETING and Fine Floor Coverings LEAH Our family serving your family—since 1925. 15986 Middlebelt between 5 and 6 Mile Roads, Livonia Telephone: (313) 522-5300 Open: Mon, Thurs, Fri 9:30 9 ...
