Her parents, Harry and Florence, owned a grocery store and were active in the Jewish community. She is a lifelong member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. She recalls spending her summers at the family cottage in Lake Orion. Her family moved to Huntington Woods at the beginning of her high school education. She was graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School in 1958 as valedictorian. She continued her education at the University of Michigan, graduating magna cum laude. After graduation, she was a French teacher in the Birmingham Public Schools system. As a young adult she was active in the synagogue and became president of the singles group. She says the best-looking blind date of her life was Saul Saulson, who was a widower with two small children. When she married him, she became an instant wife and mother. After the children were in school all day, she resumed her volunteer work on a full-time basis. In 1986, she was awarded the United Way Heart of Gold award for her community service. During the ceremony she sat next to someone active in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall (DSOH). She then began to volunteer for that organization. Last month she was chairman of the DSOH fashion show. "I feel it's important to support the arts in this day and age," she said. Her next project will be writing columns for Outlook magazine beginning in June. The quarterly magazine is published by the Women's League for Conservative Judaism. As for professional volunteering, she offers some truisms: "There's only room for one macher and a professional volunteer is someone who gets aggravated for free."
