ical Seminary to become a
rabbi.
He said he was seeking a
higher level of personal sat-
isfaction than his legal ca-
reer afforded him.
His lifelong interest in
Jewish studie, coupled with
a master's degree in
Talmud, made him feel more
comfortable about his deci-
sion to change professions.
Uprooting his family from
Massachusetts to New York,
however, was traumatic.
And although he received a
fellowship from the Wexner
Foundation, he began to
worry about the family's fi-
nances.
His wife was supportive,
although it was a difficult
adjustment. But, he said, his
legal background was a
great aid.

large practice taught me to

Mr. Perkins said. "I was also
accustomed to long days and
constraints on my personal
time."
He is in his last year at the
Seminary and hopes to take
a pulpit and teach.
For Mr. Perkins, knowing
the career path he wanted
made his decision a bit
easier.
Making a career change
usually means exchanging
the familiar for the
unknown to the accompani-
ment of feelings of uncer-
tainty and self-doubt.
But those who have suc-
cessfully made the tran-
sition — and the counselors
who help the job hunters —
say they strongly believe the
risks are worth the potential
rewards.

"Building Skill Power in an
Environment of Change" will
be the topic at the Jewish
Welfare Federation's 4th an-
nual Professional Manage-
ment Conference May 17 at
Temple Israel.
Dr. Bernard Reisman, direc-
tor of the Hornstein Program
in Jewish Communal Service
at Brandeis University, will
keynote the presentation
about changing communal
priorities and professional
values and skills. The half-
day conference begins at 8:30
a.m. with registration and
continental breakfast, and
concludes after lunch.
Jewish communal profes-
sionals will learn to develop
skills to meet the challenges
of rapid change occurring in
Detroit's network of agencies
and services.
