At Sybaris

The "Second Annual
Basketry Invitational" will
continue through May 24 at
Sybaris Gallery.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-
Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and
by appointment. For informa-
tion, call the gallery directors,

There is no orthodOxy
among this generation of
basketmakers. The diversity
of their efforts prompts ques-
tions about what constitutes
a basket. No longer defined
by material or process, many
of the works are even missing
the hole that used to define
the basket as a container.
These artists observe the
traditions of the past and
then take off with their own
free-wheeling forms. The 20
artists in Sybaris' show were
chosen to illustrate the range

Among the artists repre-
sented are the following:
Dorothy Gill Barnes has
stretched her forms into unor-
thodox constructions sug-
gesting trapezes or rocking
chairs. The bark bound,
rough and ready objects recall
the pioneering days of the
18th century.
Patti Lechman individually
handties 6,000-10,000 knots
to form her miniature fiber
pieces made from nylon
upholstery stitching cord.
The knots of the intricate pat-
terns seem like raised bead-
work and their shapes conjure
up larger associations.
Karyl Sisson salvages zip-
pers, clothespins and other
sundries that serve as
building materials for her
container forms which are in-
spired by the pyramids of
Yucatan.
Sylvia Seventy's handmade
paper vessels have a density
that suggests a kinship to
clay. Inspired by the baskets
of the Pomo Indians, Ms.
Seventy also demonstrates a
reverence for the past.
To create her baskets,
Kiyomi Iwata uses silk only.
Her translucent cubes are
made of sheer silk organza or
silk broadcloth. Each object
has its own personality deter-
mined by color, by patterns
applied to the surface with
materials like gold and cop-
per leaf or by the posture of
its stiffened threads. The
result is the illusion of a form
with a glowing light within it.
