FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1991
CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ
Local Columnist
F
rankel Associates and
Forbes/Cohen Proper-
ties have joined forces
to expand Somerset Mall,
which will include Neiman
Marcus and 45 new specialty
stores under the new name
The Somerset Collection. A
groundbreaking ceremony
was held on April 17 to
unveil plans.
" This is a proud moment
for me," said Sam Frankel,
of Frankel Associates, who
developed Somerset Mall in
1967. Mr. Frankel related
some anecdotes about the
new development. His
friends and colleagues sug-
gested he not fix Somerset,
since it isn't broken. Even
after the admonition, "Sam,
leave it alone," Mr. Frankel
decided to expand the mall
to create more space and to
assure the leading edge of
upscale retail development
into the next century.
Neiman Marcus will be
built on the site of the
former Bonwit Teller. The
141,000-square-foot store
will feature clothing for the
family, a cafe, a Steuben
crystal gallery and a bouti-
que of the French designer
Hermes. The store is schedul-
ed to open August 1992.
The Frankel Associates
and Forbes/Cohen Proper-
ties alliance was well repre-
sented at the ground break-
ing with: Sid Forbes, Nate
Forbes, David Forbes,
Maurice Cohen, Sam
Frankel and Stan
Frankel.
BAR-ILAN
The American Women for
Bar-Ilan, Detroit Chapter,
held their annual donor lun-
cheon and installation on
April 15 at the home of
Miriam Ferber. About 120
women attended and raised
$7,000 for the adopt-a-room
Leila Stollman and Nancy Glass.
project toward refurbishing
a dormitory room.
"The Detroit Chapter was
one of the first to commit to
this project," said Nancy
Glass, donor luncheon
chairman.
After the installation of of-
ficers, patrons heard a pre-
sentation by Hope Palmer
on women artists.
