racquetball took over, Brode
knew it- wouldn't last:
"There's no commitment to
the sport; somebody can learn
it in 15 minutes, have fun,
then forget it," he says.
So when racquetball de-
clined, Brode entered the
fitness business, converting
some courts to aerobics and
weight-training rooms. He
has sought to install the
newest equipment in the
fitness center and recently
spent over $2 million
refurbishing Franklin's
locker rooms.
He also replaced the club's
five outdoor clay tennis
courts with a swimming pool
so as to satisfy more
customers, he says — several
hundred on summer week-
ends as opposed to 20 tennis
players.
Calling Franklin "a
country club without a golf
course," Brode has taken aim
on more family participation
and appeal by installing
Kidsports.
The program offers children
from age six weeks to mid-
teens the opportunity to enjoy
recreation, become fit and
develop athletic skills in a
non-competitive atmosphere.
It has its own gym and
weight-training machines
designed for youngsters.
Birthday parties, weight-
control programs and
summer camp also are
available.
Since it opened last
summer, Kidsports member-
ship has grown to 300.
"It's something for the kids
to do" instead of watching
television or constantly
playing video games, Brode
says.
But he's not finished with
plans for Franklin. In
addition to working on
freestanding Kidsports clubs
for Waterford and Mount
Clemens, Brode plans to offer
basketball courts, a running
track and climbing walls at
Franklin by 1992.
