Laws Needed
To Fight Racism
Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
A government-sponsored in-
quiry into racist violence in
thig country has concluded
that new legislation is
urgently needed because ex-
isting laws are inadequate to
deal with. the level of racist
violence here.
Among 66 recommenda-
tions made to the federal
government in the two-year
study were reform of the
criminal code to outlaw
racial harassment, racial
violence and racist behavior
likely to incite hostile acts.
One of its recommenda-
tions called for amending
the laws to prevent racists
from evading prosecution by
using religion, specifically
Judaism and Islam, as
"surrogates" for race.
The groups especially sub-
jected to racist violence, ac-
cording to the inquiry, were
Asians, aboriginals, Jews
and Torres Strait islanders.
The Torres Straits separate
northeastern Australia from
Papua New Guinea.
A survey of more than 160
incidents of specifically anti-
Jewish nature that occurred
after the inquiry completed
its survey was presented to
Federal Race Commissioner
Irene Moss by the Executive
Council of Australian Jewry.
The inquiry recommended
that the federal police in-
vestigate the state police
forces to ensure fair treat-
ment of complaints of
racism.
Israeli CLAMs
Mark Minefields .
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A system
developed in Israel for mark-
ing safe lanes through
Minefields is helping, ar-
mored units of the U.S.
Marines in the Persian Gulf
area, according to the
manufacturer.
Known as the Clear Lane
Marking System, or CLAM,
it was developed by Israel
Military Industries and is
widely used by the Israel
Defense Force.
The system is mounted on
the front of tanks, equipped
with mechanical devices to
defuse land mines.
As the tank clears the
field, the CLAM is pro-
grammed to release brightly
colored markers equipped
with night illuminators.
They define the safe path
through the minefield.
Israel Military Industries
says several hundred
CLAMS have been supplied
to the marines.
