TERRY ROBES & WRAPS with "FREE" embroidered names or monograms Special Eye Care For New Israeli Settlements Bashed The sudden rush of new settlements in the West Bank, especially for in- coming Soviet Jews, has raised the ire of the Bush White House and much of the press. One of the more caustic commentaries on the new settlements came from the Buffalo News' editorial cartoonist who goes under the single name of Toles. One panel depicts a pre-fab home being lowered by a crane in the West Bank. Next, the crane lowers two "new settlers." Finally, a sign is lowered announcing a new name for the West Bank — "New Northern Ireland." In the Washington Post, Jerusalem correspondent Jackson Diehl investigated the "startling contradiction between word and deed" —despite its "repeated promises" to the Bush Ad- ministration not to do so, Israel was building new housing for Soviet immi- grants in the occupied ter- ritories. Mr. Diehl attributes the discrepancy to Ariel Sharon, the housing minister and minister in charge of Soviet immigrants. Mr. Sharon, writes Mr. Diehl, "has made it clear that he intends to build .. . thousands of new homes unless forcibly stopped." An official close to Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir told the Post, "Sharon is try- ing to embarrass Shamir and provoke him into a con- frontation on very un- favorable terms." Vidal Knocks Monotheism Gore Vidal's unbridled en- thusiasm for the Palestin- ians and his haughty criticism of Israel has often infuriated Jews. But in a conversation between him and Norman Mailer in the current Esquire, Mr. Vidal uniquely distributes his fury among the West's three major religions. "Monotheism . . ." declares Vidal, "is perhaps the most evil form of religion . "The essential absence of religion that has characteriz- ed the American state, for my money, has been a good thing . . . Monotheism has given us Judaism, Christianity and Islam. They are by nature totalitarian — one god, one ruler, one people. 'Kill, kill, kill for Jesus,' as the Cromwellians shouted." $5995 Free Monogram Until May 9th $20 °° Free Monogram Until May 9th Clearance Sale Great Values on Table Cloths from 52 inch length to 160.
