National Jewish
Book Awards

New York (JTA) — Twelve
authors and one illustrator
have won the Jewish Book
Council's 1991 National
Jewish Book Awards, widely
considered the highest rec-
ognition in American Jewish
Literature.
The council and awards
are sponsored by the Jewish
Community Centers Associ-
ation of North America.
The winners include: Nava
Semel, recipient of the best
children's literature award,
for Becoming Gershona;
Chaim Potok, the fiction
award, for The Gift of Asher
Lev; Leni Yahil, for the top
Holocaust book, The Holo-
caust: The Fate of European
Jewry — 1932-1945; Sergio
Minerbi for the best book
about Israel, The Vatican
and Zionism. Conflict in the
Holy Land — 1895-1925; and
Elisheva Carlebach for the
top book on Jewish history,
The Pursuit of Heresy: Rabbi
Moses Hagiz and the Sabba-
tian Controversies.
The awards will be pre-
sented at a ceremony June
12 at the 92nd Street YM-
YWHA in New York.
Among past winners of the
awards are Bernard
Malamud, Cynthia. Ozick,
Isaac Bashevis Singer, Leon
Uris and Elie Wiesel.
The Jewish Book Council
was established in 1943 to
promote Jewish literary
creativity, to encourage the
building of Jewish libraries
and to broaden the apprecia-
tion of Jewish literature.
In addition to the National
Book Awards program, the
council sponsors Jewish
Book Month, publishes the
trilingual Jewish Book An-
nual, syndicates .book re-
views under the title
"Jewish Books in Review,"
issues Jewish Book World
and serves as a clear-
inghouse for information
about Jewish books.

Unemployment
Feared in Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Nearly
400,000 Israelis will soon be
jobless and 200,000 immi-
grants will emigrate unless
drastic economic measures
are taken swiftly, warned
the governor of the Bank of
Israel in a report last week.
The report is the harshest
assessment of unemploy-
ment in Israel made public
to date. The governor called
for further cuts in the
minimum wage, abolishing
cost of living allowances and
new incentives for employers.
