WITHOUT YOUR HELP THESE CHILDREN MAY DIE. " In April of '1986, the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl, Russia ex- ploded with a fury 90 times more powerful than the atomic blast at Hiroshima. It is estimated that more than 800,000 Russian children have been contaminated. In Minsk alone, more than 7,000 children under the age of seven are registered as having leukemia. The effects of this contamination are unrelenting. Each month hundreds more children continue to fall victim to the ravages of leukemia, bone deformity, thyrorid abnormalities, sup- pressed immune systems and other diseases too horrifying to mention. Yet there are not the resources in Russia to pro- vide them with medical treatment or diagnosis. In response to this emergency, Chabad of Israel has created a medical relief fund called Chabad's Children of Chernobyl. Since August 4th, 340 children between the ages of six and sixteen have been airlifted from the contaminated environ- ment of Chernobyl to Kfar Chabad, a small village in Israel located 15 miles south of Tel Aviv. In addition, 50 pair of parents have joined their children. Here, as part of Chabad's Children of Chernobyl. Project, they are living, attending first- rate schools, and receiving top-quality medical care in a clinic created especially for their needs. The medical diagnoses are not good. They point to leukemia and stunted growth, enlarged thyroids, the tell tale signs of malignant nodules and tumors, and suppressed immune systems that cause six-year-old children to be hospitalized when minor colds quickly transform into life-threatening pneumonia. With proper medical treatment there is hope. However, it is necessary to act quickly before the effects become irreversible. Medical testing and treatment is expensive and funds are desperately needed. Your contribution to Chabad's Children of Chernobyl Project can give them a chance for a bright and healthy future.
