You're invited to our
CHRISTINE JONSON TRUNK SHOW
German-Israel
Continued from Page 19
give the Germany of today a
lot of credit.
"The Germans are at least
attempting to come clean,"
he said. "Not like the
Austrians who sit content
with Waldheim ruling their
government."
Jeannie Weiner, vice pres-
ident of the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Detroit,
said she's worried by Ger-
man reunification.
"We'd been concerned, yet
watchful," she said at the
consul's home. "But we're
relieved to see that some in-
roads have been made in
terms of Holocaust edu-
cation."
Other advances have in-
cluded sister city partner-
ships with Israel, Dr.
Hansen said. Since the
1970s, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf
and Heidelberg, for example,
have been linked with Tel
Aviv, Haifa and Rehovot.
"Germany has more than
60 twin city arrangements,
while the United States has
less than 50," he said.
"Every year, about 7,000
German boys and girls visit
Israel and Yad Vashem
(Israel's national Holocaust
museum). In exchange,
about 3,000 Israeli boys and
girls visit Germany."
Sharona Shapiro, area di-
rector of the AJCommittee,
said her organization annu-
ally sends young Jewish pro-
fessionals to Germany to
learn about German politics
and to strengthen leadership
skills.
"We encourage relations
between representatives of
other countries and Jews
from different American
cities," Mrs. Shapiro said.
"As issues come up that con-
cern world Jewry, we want
prepared, informed dele-
gates to speak for Jewish in-
terests."
Arnold Michlin, who
organizes interfaith and
ecumenical programs, said
he still can't bring himself to
buy a German car.
"I couldn't, but it's my
hope that younger genera-
tions today could," Mr.
Michlin said. "We should
realize that the people
(Germans) today aren't the
same ones who fed people
into the ovens." 0
