Occupied
Jerusalem

r

President Bush has de-
clared Jerusalem's Old City
and its suburbs to be Israeli
"occupied territory," while
Secretary of State James
Baker pressures Israel to halt
all Jewish "settlement-build-
ing" there.
Most of the media supports
the Administration position
and are persuading the public
that Jews are living in land
that does not belong to them,
suggesting it is illegal, even
criminal, for Jews to live in
Jerusalem's Old City and its
suburbs.
Typical is the Detroit Free
Press on March 16, 1991, in a
news report adding the
background information, as
they do very frequently, that
it is "Arab east Jerusalem
captured by Israel in the 1967
Six-Day War."
The Detroit Free Press
refuses to print letters pro-
viding the facts that the
reason Arabs, and only Arabs,
inhabited Jerusalem's Old Ci-
ty in 1967, is that 19 years
earlier, on May 29, 1948, after
almost 2,000 Jewish defen-
ders of the Old City had been
killed by Arab invaders, the
city finally surrendered. That
day, the commander of the
Arab Legion reported to Jor-
dan's King Abdullah: "Jeru-
salem, the Holy, is now
cleansed and purified; for the
first time in over a thousand
years, not a single Jew re-
mains in it."
Immediately Arabs moved
in to loot the belongings and
seize the homes of the Jews,
who became refugees.

During the Arab occupation
that followed, Jordan tried to
destroy every trace of
Jerusalerds ancient Jewish
history. No Jews, not even
American tourists if they
were Jewish, were allowed in
the Arab occupied territory.
The fact that racist policy was
in violation of the Armistice
Agreement signed by the
Government of Jordan calling
for "free access to the Holy
Places and to the cultural in-
stitutions," was of no concern
to the Great Powers.
And so it was that for the
first time since the Roman
conquest of 70 C.E., Jews
were compeltely barred from
the Old City. When the Arab
armies seized the eastern
part of Jerusalem in 1948,
Jews had been the majority
people in the city for cen-
turies as shown by Turkish
census figures and the British
government official statistics.
