He was encouraged by
noted author Cleveland
Amory to have his first-
person experience printed in
book form.
Marty begins his fourth
year at Sebastian's at
Somerset Mall in Troy .. .
Tuesdays through Thursdays
solo at the piano and Fridays
and Saturdays with his trio.
A one-evening favor to
Sebastian's owner, Matt Pren-
tice, turned into three years
. . . Prior to that, Marty had
retired from performing for 10
years, just after concluding
engagements at London Chop
House and Caucus Club .. .
In the interim, he produced
albums and commercials plus
composing for the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra and
others.
The illustrations in Maya's
First Rose also have a distinct
local flavor . . . They're by
local-ite Howard Fridson
whose grandfather, Nate
Fridson, owned Esquire Grill
and later Fridson's Delica-
tessen on Wyoming with two
cousins.
PAY NO attention to the
false rumors . . . Bill Kirkhuff
is still general manager of
Radisson Plaza at Town Cen-
ter in Southfield . . . The story
probably got started when
Radisson asked Bill to assist
on a New York City con-
sulting assignment to aid a
Manhattan hotel . . . For
several months, Bill spent
every Tuesday in the Big Ap-
ple . . . The job is finished and
his Tuesdays are back at the
local Radisson Plaza.

1987 CLASS C liquor
license with a dance and
entertainment permit has
been transferred from the
former Red Cedars to
Signature Cafe on 11 Mile .. .
It had been held in escrow.
THE COUNT keeps grow-
ing . . . could be one of the
largest turnouts yet . . . It's
Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion's annual dinner-dance,
May 4, at Westin Hotel .. .
Burt Bacharach will be the
evening's headliner for this
always-looked-for affair that
now ranks among the year's
top social events.
LOOKING BACK on Col-
umns of Yesteryears .. .
JAN. 11, 1980 ... "Some
oldies from the menu of Lin-
dy's in New York . . . Drunk
(leaving Lindy's): 'Shay, call
me a cab, willya?' . . . Admiral
Nimitz (who was standing at
the entrance): 'My good man,
I'm not a doorman, I'm an ad-
mira.' Drunk: Awright, then
call me a boat, I gotta get
home' .. .
"Customer: 'What does this
mean? There's a fly in the bot-
tom of my teacup?' Lindy's
waiter: "How would I know?
I'm a waiter, not a fortune
teller.' . . . Head waiter at
Lindy's in 1921: 'Sir, you have
to wear a tie.' Customer: 'If I
go out and buy a tie can I get
a good table?' Headwaiter:
`No, I don't like your pants
either.'
"Customer: 'Four cokes,
and make sure my glass is
clean.' Lindy's waiter (retur-
ning with the order): 'Who
gets the clean glass?' " -
OVERHEARD ... Father

the car . . . "Well, we finally
found a parking space. Now
does anyone remember why
we're here?"
OLDIES But Goodies

in Jerusalem . . . Tourist asks
him if praying does any good
. . . and the gent says, "It's
like talking to the wall."
