CERTIFIED REALTY, INC. 471-7100 Scientists Find Chemical Signals In Fertilization Rehovot, Israel (JTA) — A study led by scientists of the Weizmann Institute here suggests that chemical signals exchanged between the egg of a human female and a male sperm cell induce fertilization. The results of the study could have important implications for the treat- ment of human infertility. The findings, reported in the Proceedings of the Na- tional Academy of Sciences in Washington, are the first to show that the egg some- how communicates with the sperm. Test tube studies involving 40 Israeli women undergo- ing in vitro fertilization pro- vided evidence that an un- identified substance in the fluid released with the egg at ovulation attracts sperm cells, causing them to rush up the fallopian tube toward the egg. The studies were con- ducted by Prof. Michael Eisenbach, head of the Weizmann Institute's Department of Membrane Research and Biophysics, in collaboration with Prof. David Garbers of the Howard. Hughes Medical In- stitute and Department of Pharmacology, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, Tenn. The findings are supported by follow-up research con- ducted by Prof. Eisenbach and Dr. Dina Ralt of the Weizmann Institute, in co- operation with Drs. Mordechai Goldenberg, Jehoshua Dor and Shlomo Mashiach of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tel Aviv Uni- versity Medical School's Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. Prof. Eisenbach and his team found that human sperm cells are attracted by fluids from follicles, which nurture the maturation of an ovum prior to ovulation. Because only about 200 human spermatozoa reach the fertilization site in the Fallopian tube, out of about 300 million that enter the reproductive tract, it is possible that the attractant factors are a means for selec- ting the spermatozoa most competent for fertilization, or for coordinating optimum sperm behavior following ovulation, the scientists said. Grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the National Institutes of Health in the United States, the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Yeda Fund helped support.the research. The results may facilitate the development of new ap- proaches to treat human in- fertility in situations where the chemical homing signal is absent. Conversely, finding a way to turn off the signal could lead to another means of bir- th control. Prof. Eisenbach stressed that the nature of the signal triggering substance is at present unknown. Kuwait Ignores Arab Boycott New York (JTA) — Kuwait will not observe restrictions of the Arab League boycott on U.S. firms bidding for contracts to reconstruct Kuwait, said Thomas Pickering, the U.S. ambas- sador to the UN. Kuwait has been one of the strictest enforcers of the boycott. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 105
