Hillel Day School
Hosts Patron Event

MITZVAH PROJECT
Many Temple Beth El
families spent Easter Sun-
day working at local
hospitals and nursing homes
so Christian volunteers
could spend the day with
their families. Heather
Beth Kamins, daughter of
John and Judith Kamins
of Birmingham, helped
organize the project with
Douglas Lachman, direc-
tor of program development.

he home of Allan and
Joy Nachman was
the site of the patron
event for the upcoming
Hillel Day School annual
dinner at Adat Shalom on
May 1. Ari Goldman, re-
ligion correspondent for the
New York Times, was the
guest speaker.
Mr. Goldman spoke on the
importance of a Jewish edu-
cation. He was graduated
from day schools in New
York and Yeshiva Univer-
sity. Mr. Goldman credits
his success with his formal
education in Judaism.
"The greatest journalism
teacher I had was the
Talmud. There is more than
one argument. Never is just
one opinion given," Mr.
Goldman said. He points out
that in the Talmud and in
newspaper reporting,
several people can be correct
with different arguments.

Robert Schostak, patron
event chairman with
Beverly Liss, spoke to 100
patrons about Hillel being a
"magical" school. Mr.
Schostak noted that he is a
Hillel graduate and that 10
alumni have children atten-
ding the school. Many Hillel
parents added personal anec-
dotes about the fine education.
Hillel President Howard
Tapper is inspired to have
his own bar mitzvah after
seeing the marvelous job his
daughter did.
Host Allan Nachman said,
"The future of Hillel is
assured with the vibrant, ac-
tive people."
