heartfelt," she said. "Jewish
people understand the prob-
lems of refugees. I myself
came from Poland. We feel
compelled to help."
Andrew Giffel, executive
director at American Jewish
World Service, said he has
received more than 30 calls a
day from people concerned
about the Kurdish refugee
problem. Although he has no
figures, every day brings
more donations, he said.
It will take a few weeks to
decide how the JDC can best
provide relief to the refu-
gees, Ms. Manes said. "We
cannot decide long distance
what they need," she said,
adding that JDC staff people
plan a trip to the region.
"We want to ensure that
help gets to where it is need-
ed," Mr. Giffel said.
"We will link up with an-
other organization which
has a field presence there
once we do an assessment of
what is needed," said Mr.
Giffel, who expects his
organization to send medi-
cine and food.
Israel has also been send-.
ing medicine, blankets,
warm clothes and doctors to
the Iraq-Turkey border to
aid the Kurds, said Ofra
Ben-Yacov, consul on
academic affairs at the
Israeli Consulate in
Chicago.
"There is a lot of concern
about the Kurds in Israel,"
Ms. Ben-Yacov said. "There
is a debate whether it is
enough to give only human-
itarian aid or to give more
than that. Everyone knows
it is not enough to give med-
icine, food and blankets.
They need security too."
Both the Jewish Welfare
Federation and the Jewish
Community Council urged
Detroit Jews to participate
in national relief efforts.
"The national organiza-
tions are best equipped to do
the best job," said David
Gad-Harf, executive director
of the Jewish Community
Council.
Federation will forward
contributions for Kurdish
refugee relief to JDC's Open
Mailbox. Checks should be
made out to the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation with a nota-
tion that they be directed to
Kurdish refugee relief. Con-
tributions can be sent to the
Federation at 163 Madison,
Detroit 48226; or to the
Open Mailbox for Kurdish
Refugees, American Jewish

mittee, 711 Third Ave., 10th
