But when the invitation came to attend this year's Michigan Cancer Foundation annual black tie dinner-dance, May 4 at the Westin Hotel, celebrity photographer Linda Solomon just about flipped out and her heart started poun- ding . . . She couldn't believe her eyes. The headliner is "the love of my life!" exclaims Linda, as she speaks so reverently about Burt Bacharach and un- ashamedly blurts out, "I just love that man!" Her ongoing "love affair" with Burt Bacharach has been a long-time thing . . . with hubby Barry knowing about it for 20 years . . . (they've been married 15) . . . What does Barry think of him? . . . "If he likes fast-food hamburger sliders, he's my kind of guy, too." While Linda was attending University of Michigan, she had a large Burt Bacharach color photo amid oodles of other pictures of him in her room . . . When she came home on weekends, a six-foot- tall life-size cardboard cutout of her man who makes moun- tains move was always there in her Detroit bedroom. One night, while Linda was at the university, her parents, Mona and the late Dan Rap- paport, thought their home was robbed . . . The police came and began searching the house . . . One of them saw a cutout of Burt Bacharach, drew his pistol and was ready to "blow his head off" until realizing that Linda's love wasn't the real thing . . . Years later, she told him about the incident and he had a good laugh. Another time, Joey Neder- lander arranged to have her backstage at Pine Knob to meet Burt Bacharach . . . He came out of his shower dressed in a white robe . . . the man of her dreams . . . with "gorgeous navy blue eyes" . . . Linda could only gape with awe .. . and suddenly lost her voice. In 1970, Linda bought the best seat in the house at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre, where Burt Bacharach was appearing . . . just so she could be close to him . . . But it didn't turn out as wonderful an evening as Linda had hoped . . . not with his wife at the time, Angie Dickinson, in the seat next to her. Linda has been quite in de- mand of late . . . Her annual Academy Awards photos are always nationwide hits . . . This year, Linda's 1991 pics will be on display at Bloom- ingdale's Palm Beach for one week starting April 24 .. . then four more weeks, begin- ning May 14, at Bloom- ingdale's Manhattan in New York. She was recently hired as national spokeswoman for the camera industry (Photography Information Council). This Wednesday, Linda will be the special celebrity com- mentator for Harmony ORT's eighth annual fashion show commemorating American heroines, at Temple Beth El, on Telegraph in Birmingham . . . 6:30 p.m. boutiques, 7:30 show. "He's ageless," says Linda about Burt Bacharach . . . "I just love that man!" . . . At a party in California for Barbra Her ongoing "love affair" with Burt Bacharach has been a long-time thing . . . with hubby Barry knowing about it for 20 years. Streisand, Linda saw him and lost her voice again. A lot of people's eyes will be focused on her when Burt Bacharach comes out at the Michigan Cancer Foundation Dinner-Dance that is expected to hit an attendance of 1,500 this year. Will she be the professional Linda Solomon or a giddy gal drooling with a blank stare of adoration . . . and maybe los- ing her voice again? . . . Just in case, hubby Barry better bring some smelling salts with him. The professional in Linda will no doubt win out . . . if not immediately . . . soon . . . and she'll work with three dif- ferent cameras for every possi- ble angle, amply loaded with about 20 rolls of film . . . After all, this is Burt Bacharach .. . her crush of crushes. By the way, she likes his music too. CONGRATS . . . To Elsie and Art Goldman . . . on their 48th anniversary. THE MUSIC goes round and round as DeLuca's celebrates its 18th birthday at the same locale on Woodward and 11 1/2 Mile in Royal Oak. Leonard Randall has been at the piano and singing the entire 18 years . . . He's there Tuesdays through Saturdays . .. Buddy Clark on keyboard Sundays has been at DeLuca's 17 years . . . Mel Thompson strumming the ivories on Mondays is the "youngster" of the entertainers . . . only six years' . . . That's when Lenny, who had come over after a lengthy stay at Saksey's on Woodward and Seven Mile, cut out working on Mondays. In 1958, Dennis and wife Gina DeLuca had a little place on Hamilton and Avalon, a block north of Glendale, that seated only 45 . . . They "got up in the world" with 90 seating at their spot on Wood- ward and Six Mile from 1966 to 1971 . . . Today, just the main dining room itself at DeLuca's seats 150. A lounge, with more booths and tables, is where the seven- days-a-week entertainment has been so well received. When they bought the pro- perty and built the present DeLuca's, going strong across Woodward were Club Berkley and Northwood Inn . . . Theirs is the only one left. The lounge rocks with' rhythm . . . especially on Mon- day nights when sit-ins pull instruments out of their cases and join Mel in some good- listening jam sessions. Bob Allison (also known as "Hoosier Slim," a heck of a good pool player), whose radio show, "Ask Your Neighbor" is now 29 years old, is a piano- playing regular every Monday night . . . Mel gets on the drums and a bass guitar gent begins jamming it with guest Bob. Then Mel takes over as th e piano bar fills up and Monday "The Mike Is Yours" night takes sway. More musicians start corn- ing to sit in . . . sax, trombone, flute, electric guitar, etc. , , the trombonist, an "old timer" jazz stylist, sings his "Georgia," " It Had To Be You," "Stardust" and "Sunny Side Of The Street" with vocal inflections and mike poise you can see are from the yesteryears school of some mean, low-down blues sessions . . . He's quite the entertainer, singing to the rifling rhythms and playing his trombone to hand-clapping time. DeLuca's was always known as a good neighborhood N N 1
