to see in a person's face,"
Mr. Vogel says. "Some peo-
ple like to play golf. I watch
people."
He gives advice, too. Once,
he inadvertently broke up a
wedding. When a future
groom saw the portrait of his
fiancee as drawn by Mr.
Vogel, he cringed. It was the
face of an unpleasant, petty
woman — just as his family
had described the woman for
months. The marriage was
called off.
Mr. Vogel has also
reunited many brokenhearted
couples. As he sat at a corner
table in the Chop House, he
listened to plenty of young
men, a drink and a cigarette
in front of them, tell tales of
love gone wrong. Mr. Vogel
would draw their caricature,
then urge them to take it to
their girl and make up.
In the 1970s, Mr. Vogel
expanded from caricatures
to clowns. Of this interest,
he says, "They make people
happy. And there's a little
bit of clown in every one of
us."
One of the first to admire
his clowns was Robert
Evans, a would-be actor who
stopped in Detroit on his
way to Los Angeles. After
appearing in a number of
films, Mr. Evans became a
producer and head of Uni-
versal Studios in Hollywood.
Today Mr. Vogel, a mem-
ber of Temple Beth El,
paints clowns out of a studio
in his home. In the den, he
has a small easel, acrylic
and water color paints. A
half-sketched, smiling clown
sits on the easel, waiting to
be painted. And on the wall
hang hundreds of clown pic-
tures; the closet contains at
least several hundred more.
When painting, Mr. Vogel
aims to give each clown a
distinct expression or mood.
He has created everything
from a happy-go-lucky clown
with a bright-red nose to a
tennis-playing clown. He
either sketches from
photographs or creates his
own characters.
He begins working in the
morning after breakfast and
a quick look at the news-
paper. He likes to listen to
talk shows as he paints.
When he needs a break, he
looks out the window. He
never tires of seeing the
birds and the children.
"There's so much to see, so
much to learn," he says.
Mr. Vogel says one of the
most important lessons he
has learned in life is to work
for his dreams.
"Guts," he says. "You've
got to have guts. If you want
something, go after it." ❑
