ORCHARD LAKE ROAD
SOUTH OF MAPLE
youngsters knew little more
English than we knew He-
brew. But basketball tran-
scends the spoken word and
through a universal language
of gestures, facial expressions
and a pidgin English we com-
municated our desire to play.
There were eight kids and
Roger chose one to play on
our team. He showed the
quick intelligence and leader-
ship qualities.
To say the Israeli kids were
skilled would be too generous.
However, their enthusiasm
was unmatched. As an-
ticipated, the energy of youth
ran circles around us
veterans, but that mattered
little as we sweated and
laughed under the heat of the
sun. I was struck by the
poetry of it all — there we
were, halfway around the
world, with a group of Israeli
chldren sharing the simple
and deep love of hoops. We
were having a great time. The
setting was idyllic — we were
surrounded by the valleys of
northern Israel and the
thought occurred to me that
we were shooting baskets on
the same soil where Abraham
walked and where Ben
Gurion forged a nation. It was
Kibbutz of Dreams. It got no
better than this.
We won the game when our
teammate drained a running
sky hook from the top of the
key which was celebrated by
an impressive array of high
and low fives all around. We
proceeded directly to the
water fountain where we all
shared a long, cold drink —
yet another part of the inter-
national hoops ritual. Prior to
parting we recorded the mo-
ment on film. We arranged
the kids in two rows — one
kneeling, one standing — tell-
ing them that this is how we
do it in America. We bid them
goodbye ,and flushed with the
thrill of hoops we drove away.
Now Scud missiles have
fallen on streets that I walk-
ed only eleven months ago.
Fortunately, the Persian Gulf
war is over but it is naive to
suppose that the problems of
the Middle East will disap-
pear in the wake of the Allied
victory. Yet for one afternoon,
one glorious, sunny, hoop-
filled afternoon, it was not
Arab versus Jew. It was not
Palestinian versus Israeli. It
was a bunch of kids running,
jumping, laughing and hav-
ing fun on a basketball court.
We would go on to have
several good runs later in the
trip in Tel Aviv, and although
we have spent countless hours
on the court since our return
to America, nothing will com-
pare to the special memories
of our first taste of hoops in
the Holy Land. ❑

The Art of Dry Cleaning:
Dry cleaning is the use of non•water based
(hence dry) liquids to remove soil and stains
from fabrics. All dry cleaners have access to
the same liquids but not all are as skillful in
their use. Like a master artists' skill with his
paints, we at MY Cleaners are more skilled and
achieve masterful results in dry cleaning.
