were Jewish and reluctantly
told their story.
They lost their parents,
survived Auschwitz, escaped
into the woods after the con-
voy was shelled, and made
their way to the village. But,
the kind Czech who
sheltered them had told
them he would need the
room in a few days for a
relative who was returning
from the war. We decided we
would take them back to our
village the next day.
I picked up the girls and,
on the way back, drove them
to an Army hospital to have
them examined. Helena and
Agnes had no serious prob-
lems and were reassured
that a better diet would im-
prove their health. But
Heidi was kept there for
heart examinations and
treatment.
As we approached our
village, I stopped at the
nicest house I could spot, and
banged on the front door. A
fat Sudeten German, an
unhappy frown on his face,
greeted me with a gruff
"What do you want?"
Purposefully grasping my
rifle, I ordered him to ac-
company me on an inspec-
tion of the house. It had
three rooms with a kitchen
that could be closed off as an
apartment.
"Remove all your personal
things from these rooms in
five minutes!" I barked. "I'm
bringing you guests."
Helena and Agnes were
bewildered by their new
luxurious surroundings.
While they were unpacking
the few boxes with their
belongings, I went to the
local police barracks three
doors away. In German, I
told the girls' story to the
Czech Partisans, who were
patrolling the area, and ask-
ed them to keep a sharp eye
on my charges. They were
eager to cooperate.
One gave me a radio he
had "liberated" and three
accompanied me back to the
house. While I was install-
ing the radio and enjoying
the evident delight of
Helena and Agnes, the Par-
tisans were having a forceful
and intense "conference"
with the owner of the house.
There would be no problems,
I was sure.
At my own billet, I called a
few of the Jewish GIs
together and told them
about my girls. Mess
Sergeant Bill Feder rounded
up some food, and others dug
through duffle bags and
lockers for anything that
could be useful to the young
survivors.
That evening, nine rugged
American combat veterans
