Labor Leader Chaikin Dies New York (JTA) — Sol Chaikin, a labor organizer who fought sweatshops, im- ports and dwindling union membership during a 50- year career devoted almost entirely to improving the lot of garment workers, died here April 1 of heart failure at the age of 73. The New York-born union leader who graduated from City College and Brooklyn Law School headed the International Ladies Gar- ment Workers Union from 1975 to 1986. Although Mr. Chaikin sought to raise public awareness of the loss of jobs to foreign competition, IL- GWU membership was down to 220,000 when he retired. It currently has about 175,000 members. As ILGWU president, Mr. Chaikin led the fight to eliminate sweatshops in New York's Chinatown and elsewhere that employed new immigrants at substan- dard wages. Mr. Chaikin joined the union as an organizer in 1940. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and returned to the gar- ment workers afterwards to work as an organizer in New England and later in the Southwest. He was elected interna- tional vice president of the ILGWU in 1973. a WNAITSR ► EL Nava atieio TRANQUILITY, BEAUTY AND DIGNITY ENHANCED BY PERPETUAL CARE 42400 12 MILE ROAD NOVI, MICHIGAN 48050 ACROSS FROM THE TWELVE OAKS MALL $4450° JEWISH NATIONAL FUND 18877 W.
