FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 1991
"exterminated" (your term).
That is without any basis in
fact or reality.
For The Jewish News, of all
papers, to bandy about the
word "extermination," that
we know about all too well,
further compounds the
shamefulness of your
editorial.
Yes, Americans, and Jewish
Americans in particular, are
justifiably relieved that Sad-
dam Hussein's storm troops
were forced out of Kuwait at
a cost of fewer allied lives
than originally thought possi-
ble. Would your paper have
been happier if we too had
suffered 100,000 deaths?
Then you say that the war
was "ostensibly" to deter ag-
gression. How can you say
"ostensibly" — when this
modern-day Hitler, who has
sworn to destroy Israel, takes
over and eviscerates a
"friendly" Arab country on
his march toward Jerusalem.
Further, America's sense of
"national virility and pur-
pose" is not, as you say, "tied
inextricably to slaughter"; it
is tied to stopping the human
and national destruction of
Saddam Hussein.
The Vietnam syndrome was
thankfully overcome, not, as
you say, "by a slaughter of im-
mense proportions," but by
showing ourselves and the
world that when force was
needed to deter naked aggres-
sion, it would be used. Period.
We Americans do not, as
you say, "stand most tall
when we kill with such feroci-
ty"; we stand tall when we
respond to and eliminate the
naked aggression of a nation
led by today's Hitler.
Your "shameful" editorial
should be followed by your
apology to your readers, your
community, and your country.

Paper's Liberal
Political Bias
The glowing feature story
on Democratic State
Representative Maxine Ber-
man which appeared in The
Jewish News on March 29 is
another example of the liber-
al bias of your newspaper.
This goes far beyond the fact
that you never publish such
glowing feature stories on
Republican legislators.
The Berman article is a con-
tinuation of a long list of ar-
ticles that appeared in your
newspaper designed to make
liberal activists and politi-
cians look good.
If The Jewish News is in-
terested in impartial jour-
nalism, the following actions
might somewhat counter the
unfairness the newspaper has
shown in the past:
1) The Jewish News should
publish a glowing feature
story on Republican State
Senator David Honigman,
other than to say that his
August victory party resembl-
ed a scene from the yuppie
television drama "thirty-
something," as if Democratic
legislators live in hovels. (But
that's okay; Democrats are
allowed to be rich.)
2) The Jewish News should
publish an article on young
Jewish conservative activists
and what inspired their
involvement.
3) Your newspaper should
carry a monthly column by
me, devoted to the conser-
vative perspective on local
and national issues.
4) Most importantly, The
Jewish News should pro-
minently print a retraction of
all the nice things said about
Rep. Burton Leland and his
supposed commitment to
Detroit.

Editor's note: Mr. Mayer has
twice run against Ms. Berman
for state representative.
The HMC Should
Charge Admission
Concerning your cover story
on March 15 about the loss of
funding from the state to the
Holocaust Memorial Center,
as a long time supporter of
the HMC I have wondered
how it maintained its policy
of not having an admission
fee.
Governor Engler's proposed
cutback of state funding to
cultural and arts programs,
including $115,000 to the
HMC, is very misguided and
absurd. However, it would be
practical, justifiable and
realistic to charge a nominal
entrance fee in the $2-$4
range.
When my daughters, who
attend public school, go on
field trips, as thousands of
students do in Michigan each
year, they pay admissions
readily. They have had
enriching, fun and educa-
tional experiences at the
Detroit Science Center,
Greenfield Village, Marquis
Theatre, and the Hands On
and Dinosaur museums in
Ann Arbor and have willing-
ly paid the admission fees,
which we as their parents
were informed of in advance.
We Jews, as individuals and
as organizations, are already
stretched thin in our
tzedekah. Parents expect to
pay entrance fees, which is
most appropriate.
