our Jewish players are
aiming at a state
championship this
weekend in men's recrea-
tional league basketball.
The four — Jay Offen,
Steve Oshinsky, Steve
Schwartz and Larry Horn —
are members of the
Southfield Parks and
Recreation championship
team which has lost only two
games in the last two years.
Called Phi Slamma Jamma,
the team record this year is
20-1.
Horn is the senior member
of the group at age 29. The
others are 27.
The Jewish players have
attracted a talented group of
non-Jews to the team. Troy
Russell was a draft choice of
the Los Angeles Clippers,
Vincent Giles was drafted by
the Pistons and James
Hunter is a former Detroit
Lion. Rounding out the
squad are Reggie Brown and
Anthony White.
Oshinsky played basket-
ball at West Bloomfield
High and Wayne State Uni-
versity and Schwartz played
football at Wayne.
"The four of us started
playing a number of years
ago," said Offen, "and we
entered a team in the
Southfield Wednesday night
league three years ago."
The team had to win its
league title at Birney Middle
School and then the
Southfield city champion-

ship in order to qualify for
the state tournament.
League rules don't allow
three-point shots or dunk-
ing, Offen said.
Dave Boyer of Southfield
Parks and Recreation be-
lieves Phi Slamma Jamma
has a good chance in the
tournament. "When they
play together, they play
well," he said, and every
man on the roster con-
tributes because of the lim-
ited number of team mem-
bers.
Phi Jamma Slamma
defeated Farmington Hills
to win its district, and will
play either Northville or
Livonia tonight in the state
tournament. If the
Southfield team wins, it will
face perennial recreation
power Warren on Saturday.
The state winner will need
four victories this weekend.
The state tournament will
be played at high schools in
the Flint area. ❑

This former slugging third baseman of the Cleveland
Indians led the American League in home runs in 1950 and
1953. Now he's a general manager of a National League
club.

As a member of the New York Yankees, he became the
major league's first designated hitter in April of 1973.

In 1969 while playing first base for the Washington
Senators, he hit three home runs in one game.
