Repeating Beastialities

PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Editor Emeritus

N

o matter how over-
whelming the con-
tempt over repeating
anti-Semitic bestialities,
"The Protocols" in all distor-
tions all too frequently gain
circulation. They have at
times acquired notoriety
from unexpected sources of
some prominence. Father
Charles Coughlin and Henry
Ford, the elder, spread them
with devilish glee.
A Jewish Telegraphic
Agency report from Sidney,
Australia, carried this item
on March 13:

The Adelaide Adver-
tiser, the leading news-
paper in south Australia,
has been blasted in the
federal Parliament for
promoting the "Protocols
of the Learned Elders of
Zion" as a guide to cur-
rent events.
The advice was given in
the context of its daily
column, "What's Your
Problem?" which referred
to the anti-Semitic forgery
which originated in
Czarist Russia as the best
way for our readers to
understand President
Bush's "new world
order."
This is the manner in
which the disgusting
"Protocols" have been
utilized by anti-Semites.
Now comes additional
evidence quoted from the
March 14 issue of the Miami
Jewish Tribune, which
reveals the spreading of the
libels on our very doorstep:
A local Spanish-
language newspaper
blames Jews for the war
in the Persian Gulf. "This
is a Jewish War,"
headlined a recent issue,
devoted entirely to attack-
ing Jews and the Jewish
state. Other recent issues
attacked Israel, although
less forcefully ...
"This newspaper uses
classic anti-Semitic
themes that we have seen
for generations," said Ar-
thur Teitelbaum,
southern area director of
the Anti-Defamation
league of B'nai B'rith.
"That issue of the paper is
anti-Semitic garbage " ...
(The editor) said he
published this issue be-
cause he believes that the
United States has been
unfair in its willingness to
come to the aid of Israel,
but not to the aid of
Cubans. He said he does

Henry Ford

not believe relations can
be good between Cubans
and Jews, until the Jew-
ish community helps the
Cubans in exile.
So the Jews are responsi-
ble for the Gulf war? They
were also blamed by the
world's anti-Semites for
World War II. In a highly ac-
claimed biography of Henry
Ford I, who became the noto-
rious anti-Semite, we find an
amazing accusation against
Jews as being responsible for
the Second World War. Pro-
fessor Lewis revealed the
following:
Another barrage of un-
favorable publicity fell on
Ford in 1941 when Ed-
mund C. Heine, ex-
manager of German
operations, was tried and
convicted on espionage
charges in the Federal
District Court in
Brooklyn. Earlier the
same year, a complaint was
filed in the Federal
District Court in San
Francisco against Ger-
man Consul-General Fritz
Wiedemann. Ford was
accused of working with
Wiedemann and Lind-
bergh "to lull the nation
into a false sense of
security." In an open
letter to Army and Navy
Departments, the UAW-
CIO, which had reasons of
its own for attacking
Ford, demanded in 1940
that the two services in-
vestigate the "Nazi sym-
pathies" of the Ford
Company...
Ford had no one but
himself to blame for some
of the abuse which was
heaped upon him. His
willingness in 1940 to
become godfather to
Louis Ferdinand's second
son might be ascribed to
personal attachment, but

some of his public
statements gave gra-
tuitous confirmation to
the allegations against
him. When, in late August
1939, he was asked his
opinion of Hitler, he
replied, " I .don't know
Hitler personally, but at
least Germany keeps its
people at work " .. .
Henry Ford's venom
cannot be forgotten. On
Sept. 3, 1963, the London
Jewish Chronicle published
an article of mine, quoted
here in part:
Congressman John
Leisinski, who represents
the district which in-
cludes Dearborn, where
the Ford factories are
located, wanted the Post
Office to issue a com-
memorative stamp, but
his request was refused
while the refusal was
upheld by the White
House. Another refusal
came from the Detroit
City Planning Commis-
sion, which unanimously
rejected a proposal to
have a park named in
Henry Ford's honour.
At the same time the au-
thors of biographies of
Henry Ford spoke about
Ford's background,

Ford had no one but
himself to blame
for some of the
abuse heaped upon
him.

underlining his anti-
Semitism and the high
handed methods he used
to suppress organised
labour ... In his maga-
zine, the Dearborn In-
dependent,
he had
reprinted the atrocious lies
of the "Protocols of the
Elders of Zion" and when
he attacked by name
Aaron Sapiro and Herman
Bernstein, he provided an
opportunity for these two
Jews to start libel suits
against him ...
A Congressional commit-
tee engaged in investiga-
tions of Nazi activities in
the 1930s was called upon
to probe the anti-Semitic
background of the manner
of Henry Ford because of
the manner in which "The
International Jew" can-
ards were being circulated
in Germany, Spain, Brazil
and other countries ...
In 1938 Hitler's highest
award, the Grand Cross of
the Supreme Order of the
German Eagle, was pre-
sented to Henry Ford in his
