Opera Night Can Steal The Show
At A Popular Livonia Restaurant

DANNY RASKIN

NEXT DOOR TO OUR FULL.SERVICE RESTAURANT

Lyres 4-30-91 J11

I

ou see the lighted red
awning on Plymouth,
about three blocks
west of Merriman . . . and
pull into the private parking
lot ready for an evening treat.
This is a Wednesday . . . and
it's opera night at DePalma's,
celebrating anniversary
number three at the locale
which has become so popular.
Who's that up there singing
with Dino Valle? . . . Jack
Morris you say? . . . Sure
doesn't look like the former
Detroit Tiger pitcher now
with the Minnesota Twins . . .
And besides, his good friend
Johnny Ginopolis will attest
that Jack isn't much of a
singer.
But have no fear . . . this is
another Jack Morris . . . and
he can sing . . . "Now if he
could only - pitch," Sparky
Anderson would probably say.
DePalma's has had opera
two of the three years it's
been open . . . and the arias
by Dino Valle, baritone; Jack
Morris, tenor; Bob Pyrie,
dramatic tenor; and Gina
D'Alessio, soprano; are
wonderful accompaniments
to the authentic Italian fare
of owner-chef Vita DePalma.

Y

David Wilson, regular
pianist for opera night at
DePalma's, was organist
many years at Temple Israel
. . . He was off doing a concert
elsewhere this evening and
his replacement was a piano
teacher at Marygrove College,
Sister Rose Carmel Burgess.
The singers from Verdi
Opera Theatre of Michigan
and its subsidiary, Statue of
Enrico Caruso Society, enter-
tain with powerful voices that
require no microphone . . .
Most of the singing is from a
small stage in the center of
DePalma's, where songs like
"Finiculi, Finicula," "Yours Is
My Heart Alone," "Oh What
a Beautiful Morning" from
Oklahoma, Shubert's "Sere-
nade," "The Drinking Song"
from La Traviata, "La For-
sa De Destino" (the force
of destiny) by Verdi, "Tell Me
That You Love Me Tonight,"
arias from Tosca, Othello,
Mozart's Don Giovanni, etc.
are sung with tonal precision.
The audience clapped
hands in unison as Dino and
Gina strolled the room sing-
ing "Those Were The Days"
and "Hava Nagila."
There's entertainment
Tuesday through Saturday at
DePalma's . . . Tuesday and

Friday is Ron DePalma (no
relation) at the piano . . .
Thursday has strolling musi-
cians playing mandolin and
accordion . . . and Saturday,
Gina D'Alessio is back sing-
ing and also strumming the
keyboard.
Ownership and operation at
DePalma's is a family affair
. . . Vito's wife, Giulia, makes
desserts . . . their daughter,
Gracie, is hostess, and son
Paul plays accordion and
tends bars evenings part-time
. . . Personable and efficient
general manager since it
opened, Ray Borden, married
into the family . . . His wife
Anna is the daughter of Vito's
sister.
Vito saw a customer that
looked very familiar . . . went
over and told her so . . . The
woman said it was very possi-
ble since she used to be a
waitress . . . Then it came to
him where he knew her from
. . . She used to be a waitress
at Darbys on Seven Mile and
Wyoming . . . Vito was night
chef for Sam Boesky from
1959 to 1965.
Many familiar faces enjoy
the festive atmosphere at
DePalma's . . . Kay and Sam
Geller, Ken and Sharon
Singer with Ken's mother
Minnie . . . Jerrold Sherman
. . . Birthday celebration was
for Linda Sherr by Teri
Craine, Shirley Halprin,
Naomi Reiter and Barbara
Eskin . . . All five gals attend-
ed Durfee Intermediate
together.

Dining room seating at
DePalma's is 125 . . . with a
14-seater bar separated by
mirrored posts and drapes . . .
It's much like the
neighborhood spot where you
like to go regularly . . . This
is a big basis on which
DePalma's business is built
. . . come-back regularity . . .
a restaurant asset of gold that
can't be bought.

CONGRATS ... to Harold
and Cheryl Blumeno . . . on
their 40th anniversary . . .
Who said blind dates don't
have a future?
WALID'S Middle Eastern
dining will open in May on
Northwestern in Farmington
Hills by Walid and Faten Eid,
formerly of a popular eatery
in the northwest area . . .
They have the Riverfront
Cafe downtown.
AFTER ALL these years,
the very popular outside herb
garden at Cafe Cortina, 10
Mile east of Orchard Lake
Road, will be relocated to
another spot . . . Reason is the

addition of more parking
because of Cafe Cortina's suc-
cessful European Garden Par-
ty Room . . . Good thing
owners Rina and Adriano
Tonon own the property and
have enough land to do this.
DENA WEIN will be in-
stalled this Wednesday at the
Furniture Club . . . as new
president of Galilee Chapter
of B'nai B'rith Women.

COMING DIRECTLY

here from Bucharest,
Romania, in their first
American appearance, will
be the Ansemble DOR, a
youth group of 26 dancers, 10
musicians and 15 pan pipers
. . . It is considered among
Romania's best.
They'll be featured at the
fourth annual International
Folk Dance Festival by City of
Southfield and International

This Jack Morris
throws strikes on
the stage.

Institute of Metropolitan
Detroit, April 21, 4:30-7:30
p.m., at Southfield's Civic
Center on Evergreen and
Civic Center Drive.
This is the third year that
an overseas group has been
featured at this fine event . . .
None the first year, 1988, but
then 1989 saw Katrina and
Joseph Semjan, premiere solo
dancers from Sarisan, in
Slovakia, in their first U.S.
appearance . . . In 1990, the
entire Sarisan Slovak Folk
Ensemble came here.
Backgrounds at the festival
will include Greek, Polish,
East Indian, Irish, Israeli,
Argentinian, African, Slovak,
Lithuanian and Romanian.
An ethnic buffet 4-6 p.m.
will highlight Polish, Italian,
Lebanese, Japanese, Thai, In-
dian, Oriental, Jewish and
French entrees and desserts
by area restaurateurs . . . plus
wines and gourmet coffees.
Tickets are $13.50 in ad-
vance and $15 at the door . . .

field's Community Relations
Department . . . For more
info, call the department,
354-4854.
REUNION DEPT ... Oak

togetherness is set for Nov. 30

THE NEW LOOK at

and outdoor decor change . . .
