But when the Depression hit, tradesmen were making low wages, too — 25 cents an hour to build houses. So I guess he did well." In 1934, after the crea- tion of the Federal Housing Authority, Sanford Adler started a mortgage com- pany called First Mortgage Corp. Ed Rose invested in the company, which later became Advance Mor- tgage. "I sold it to him for $105,000," says Mr. Adler, who now is a developer in Beverly Hills, Calif. "He taught me everything." "Ed made the business," Max Rosenfeld adds. "He had a no-nonsense, no- thrills philosophy and the boys honed in on it." Ed Rose's son, Irving, ran Advance Mortgage for many years until its sale in 1970 for $30 million to Citicorp. Later, the family purchased Fidelity Bank, of which Leslie Rose is president. Sheldon Rose serves as president and chief executive officer of the construction company. Irving since has joined the day-to-day operations of the building company. (All business decisions are made with input of the family, who sit on the board of directors.) Sheldon's son, Warren Rose, is the only third- generation family member to work in the business. Ed and Lillian weren't too social, and they didn't frequent parties or political and charity functions. Ed Rose played golf and squash. He and his wife were not religious, though Ed was a founding member of Temple Israel. Ed Rose was critical of the government, and he sometimes referred to bu- reaucrats as communists. Although he lived a modest lifestyle and didn't spend freely, Ed Rose readily gave to charity. In 1979, Ed Rose donated $500,000 for construction of a high school in Ofakim, Israel. In 1985, he gave $100,000 to build a library in Detroit's project renewal sister city of Ramie, Israel. He also paid for construc- tion of a senior center in Israel. When he died, Ed Rose left an undisclosed amount of money in an endowment entrusted to his sons to do- nate to worthy causes. These funds were used to pay for a freedom flight for Soviet Jews to emigrate to Israel. ❑ "The Jewish National Fund has been entrusted with a most important asset of the people of Israel: the national land.
