Today, Kosher varietal wines come from
a variety of sources.

EILEEN BEAL

Special to The Jewish News

W

hen I was invited to
the home of Ortho-
dox friends for
Passover, I looked forward to
the reading of the Haggadah,
the bantering with the
children, the special sense of
family around the Passover
table.
But I didn't look forward to
the four cups of wine we
would drink during the read-
ing of the seder service, or to
the wine we'd drink with the
meal. I was expecting the
worst examples of the wine-
maker's art — the familiar
sweet, cloying, Concord-y
wine. Thanks to the thought-
fulness of another guest at
my friends' Passover table,
however, the worst never
materialized. Instead, I was
introduced to a whole new
category of kosher wines —
kosher varietals.
From planting the vines
through bottling and label-
ing, all kosher wines are
made under rabbinic supervi-
sion; all are made by Sabbath
observant Jews. Kosher
varietal winemakers add a
few more steps to the process;
they use specific grapes to
make the wine and add the
year the wine is bottled to its
name; hence, Seyval Blanc
(grape type) '89 (year bottled).
The kosher varietal wine
"revolution" has been quiet-
ly going on in the United
States for over 20 years. It
began, says .Yoram Kafkafi,
managing directory of The
Flagship Import Company,
"when we started importing
(Carmel winery's) varietal
wines into the United States!"
Today, there are quite a few
other wineries in Israel
besides Carmel that are ex-
porting varietal wines to the
United States. Also, in the
last few years, quite a few
kosher varietals have started
coming in from Europe.
About a dozen years ago,
American wineries picked up
on the kosher trend, and
about eight or ten years ago
the California and New York
wineries began selling them.
Today, small wineries in other
areas of the United States,
especially Pennsylvania and
Ohio, also make kosher
wines.
But kosher wines aren't the
best-sellers they are today
just because Jewish wine

Cleveland, Ohio.

drinkers decided they wanted
kosher varietals. The whole
wine industry is in an up-
swing, says Mr. Kafkafi. "The
same trends that drive the
mainstream wine market
(drive) the kosher wine
market, too."
Another factor that con-
tributes to the yearly growth
in the kosher varietal wine
industry is pricing, says Sam
Rotenberg, a representative of
Kedem Wine Company, the
largest importer of kosher
wines in the U.S. "We try to
keep a better price on our
kosher wines than some (pro-
ducers) do on their non-
kosher wines," he says.

Best Kosher Wines

At last year's second inter-
national Kosher Wine Com-
petition, sponsored by the In-
ternational Jewish Festival
and Les Amis du Vin, these
wines were selected as the
best of the best.
