Federation Begins
Archives Project

The Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion will set up a "living ar-
chives" for its papers,
photographs and other
materials that record the
history of the Jewish com-
munity of Detroit.
The one-year project, under-
written by private donors and
overseen by an Archives Com-
mittee, will begin the process
of preserving documents.
A professional archivist,
Sharon Alterman, has been
hired part-time by Federation
to launch its program. She
will work in cooperation with
the Michigan Jewish Histori-
cal Society and with the
guidance of Philip Mason,
director of the Walter P.
Reuther Library of Labor and
Urban Affairs at Wayne State
University.
Future funding for the pro-
ject will be determined at the
conclusion of the year. At this
time, the archives will be
housed at the Federation's
headquarters building.
Federation President Mark
Schlussel named Judge Avern
Cohn as chairman of the
Federation Archives Commit-
tee. Other members are Prof.
Sidney Bolkosky, Gilbert Bor-
man, Judy Cantor, Sol
Drachler, David Hermelin,
Joel Jacob, Alan Kandel,
Lester Morris, Irwin Shaw,
