MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK CENTER 28111 TELEGRAPH AT 12 MILE & 1-696 SOUTHFIELD 355-1000 THE UNBEATABLE DEALER THE UNBEATABLE DEALER THE UNBEATABLE DEALER 10 FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1991 Jews For Judaism Lists With Messianics PHIL JACOBS Managing Editor R onnie Schreiber, the Midwest coordinator of Jews for Judaism, never thought he'd want to be grouped with anything calling itself messianic. But a listing in the newest Ameritech PagesPlus in- cludes Jews for Judaism in between two messianic organizations. And that's exactly where Mr. Schreiber wants to be. The directory heading is called "Synagogues- Messianic." There, between messianic organizations Congregation Beth Messiah and Shema Yisrael, is a listing for Jews for Judaism. The listing reads, "Questions about Messianic Synagogues, Call Jews for Judaism, 968-JEWS." "This is the first time we've done something like this," Mr. Schreiber said. "We were concerned that when somebody • moves into town, they'll see the ads for these groups and call them." Mr. Schreiber felt that listings for the messianic groups were false advertis- ing because they were "churches masquerading as a synagogue." Loren Jacobs, spiritual leader of Beth Messiah, said the Jews for Judaism adver- tising tactic was actually the deceptive practice. "Jews for Judaism is not a messianic synagogue," Mr. Jacobs said, "so I see this as somewhat deceptive of them." ❑ B'nai B'rith Women Host Conference The Metropolitan Detroit Council of B'nai B'rith Women will host the East Central Region conference April 26-28 at the Troy Mar- riott Conference Center. Titled "Image in Vogue," the conference will feature study groups on Israel with Detroit Shlicha Sivan Maas; on the impact of interfaith marriage on couples and families with Elaine Zak, senior staff, University of Michigan Center for the Child and Family; and on Jewish parenting and grand- parenting in the 90s with coordinator of the Jewish Ex- periences For Families (JEFF program), Harlene Appel- man. Channel 7 anchorwoman Cheryl Chodun will keynote the Saturday lunch with her investigations of stories relating to domestic violence. Sunday's program will feature a presentation by ADL chairwoman Linda Soberman on the Empower- ment of Women, followed by a Harriet Horwitz panel on the Changing Roles of Jewish Women. Panelists will include Congresswoman Maxine Berman; Cantor Gail Hirschenfang; district manager of Carlson Travel, Annette Langwald; and B'nai B'rith Women International President Harriet Horwitz. For information about "Im- age in Vogue," call the B'nai B'rith Women East Central Regional office, (216) 751-8880. Support Group Topic: Power Of Music The Low Vision Peer Sup- port Group of the Maple- Drake Jewish Community Center will explore the topic, "The Power of Music" at its meeting 1 p.m. April 11 in Shiffman Hall. Professor Sammi Liebman of Wayne State University's School of Music will discuss the positive impact of music in our lives. Participants will create musical expressions through song and in- struments. An informal lunch will precede the meeting at 12:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch.
