Galleries Set
Quilt Exhibit

The Center Galleries will
host the opening of "For John
Cox's Daughter," an exhibit
that features an array of con-
temporary African-American
quilts from the southeastern
United States.
Frances Dorsey, organizing
curator, located and selected
this many-hued display of
original, handcrafted art from
Alabama, Mississippi and
Georgia.
The exhibition takes its ti-
tle from a blue denim quilt.
In addition to the display of
12 quilts, a two-day sale will
occur 12-3 p.m. April 27-28.
Organized by the Jean Paul
Slusser Gallery of the Univer-
sity of Michigan School of
Art, the exhibition at Center
Galleries will take place con-
current with the Henry
Ossawa Tanner retrospective
exhibition at the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts and related
programs at the Detroit
Historical Museum, Your
Heritage House and the
Museum of African-American
History, all located in the
Cultural Center.
A
fully
illustrated
catalogue with an introduc-
tory essay and biographies of
the quilters represented is
available.
The opening reception will
take place 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
April 26. The exhibit will be
on view in the Center
Galleries April 26-June 7.
The Center Galleries are
located at Woodward and Kir-
by in the Park Shelton. Ex-
hibitions are open to the
public and admission is free.
Gallery hours are: Tuesday-
Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Satur-
day and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4
p.m.

Gallery Hosts
Photo Exhibit

The Book Beat in Oak Park
will host a photography ex-
hibit with the works of Jim
Secreto and Peggy Day
through the end of April.
Mr. Secreto's works feature
still reproductions of circus
and carnival wooden
sculptures carved in the
1920s.
Ms. Day's photographs il-
lustrate a theatrical story of
fantasy and transformation
featuring cats, birds, masks
and a curious child.
Photographs are available
for sale as signed, limited
editions. The gallery is open
10 a.m.- 9 p.m. Monday
through Saturday and 10
a.m.- 5 p.m. Sunday.
