in New York City that played
at weddings, bar mitzvahs
and other social functions.
He soon began writing
songs, but feeling more confi-
dent with just the words, he
persuaded Saul Chaplin, the
pianist in the orchestra in
which he was then playing
violin, to join him in a song-
writing partnership. They col-
laborated on one of Mr.
Cahn's first songs called
"Shake Your Head From Side
to Side."
One thing led to another,
Mr. Cahn says, and soon the
team of Cahn and Chaplin
were very much in demand.
One of their early songs,
"Shoe Shine Boy," performed
by Louis Armstrong in the
finale of a revue at the Cotton
Club in Harlem, was a major
hit in 1936.
The partners were then
placed under contract by the
Warner Brothers Vitaphone
Studios in Brooklyn, an
organization that, according
to Mr. Cahn, seemed to have
the motto, "We don't want it
good — we want it by Thurs-
day!"
When the studio closed
down in 1940 and moved to
Hollywood, Mr. Cahn and Mr.
Chaplin went with it. But
unable to duplicate past suc-
cesses, they eventually parted.
Over the years Mr. Cahn
found other partners, in-
cluding Jule Styne, and con-
tinued to flourish. "I've
Heard That Song Before" be-
came the first of many Cahn-
Styne songs t reach the Hit
Parade.
They also produced a suc-
cessful musical on Broadway
in 1947 called High Button
Shoes. Today that show and
many of the songs from it, in-
cluding "Papa Won't You
Dance With Me" and "I Still
Get Jealous," remain some of
Mr. Cahn's favorites.
Mr. Cahn has also written
with Jimmy Van Heusen, and
that combination produced
Mr. Cahn's all-time favorite
song, "Call Me Irresponsible."
"Today I am a very happy
man," Mr. Cahn admits. "I'm
right where I want to be —
still writing songs and,
whenever I have the chance,
up there on stage singing and
entertaining audiences. I like
to tell people about my life
and to sing my songs for
them, including the one that
I love so much, 'Call Me
Irresponsible.'
"In fact, I love telling au-
diences why I'm so especially
proud of that one song," he
concludes. "You have to
realize that it contains five
syllable words, and
remember, I'm a gentleman
who came from a one syllable
neighborhood!" ❑
