Pollard's sister and a key
organizer on his behalf, also
welcomed the decision, but
added that she did not expect
much to come of it. "It's a
case of the tail wagging the
dog," she said, maintaining
that the panel was only ac-
ting because of public
pressure.
She also said she was not
surprised that the panel
wants to keep family mem-
bers out of the process.
"They don't want to face us.
We've made clear what we
think of their obstructionist
activities," she said.
However, panel spokes-
men insisted that their deci-
sion to hold a legal review of
the case, after three years of
discussing the Pollard affair,
should not be interpreted as
bowing to pressure.
Mr. Chanes said that "if
NJCRAC decides some kind
of formal action is required,
the feeling is this would be a
policy decision, or something
close to that, and that it
would be inappropriate to do
that without again exploring
the situation thoroughly."

Nazi Hunt
'Down Under'
Sydney,Australia (JTA) —
Jewish groups here and
abroad conditionally are
welcoming an announce-
ment that Australia and
New Zealand would coop-
erate in tracing alleged Nazi
war criminals.
But they insist on more
definitive action, including
official investigations and
new legislation to deal with
the prosecution, extradition
or deportation of war
criminals found in either
country.
Those demands were rais-
ed after New Zealand At-
torney General Paul East
announced that the Cabinet
had decided that "New
Zealand is to enter negotia-
tions with the Australian
government with a view to
sharing information held by
that government on war
criminals who might be liv-
ing in this part of the
world."
However, Mr. East said,
"the New Zealand govern-
ment is not yet convinced of
the need to establish a spe-
cial unit to investigate
allegations that there are
Nazi war criminals resident
in New Zealand."
But he agreed that
"further investigations
need to be undertaken.
