cause the Israelite women,
while in Egypt, gave birth to
their babies in apple or-
chards. They chose the apple
tree because only after it has
born fruit do the leaves grow
to protect the fruit. "We will
do the same," said the women.
"We will bear our children
under apple trees, and God
will protect our children and
redeem them."
And now, back with the
kids, which makes sense con-
sidering how pivotal children
are to the Passover story.
Remember, Pharoah offered
to free the Jews if they would
leave their children in Egypt.
But Moses insisted, "With
our young and our old we will
go." And then, when the
wandering ended, the older
Israelites had to stay behind
in the desert. Only their
children were allowed to
enter the Promised Land.
We must let our children
enter our seders. We must tell
them of the Exodus so that
they may, in turn, tell it to
their children.

In Washington, visiting
French Premier Michel
Rocard agreed. While the
PLO has lost credibility in
the West because of its sup-
port for Iraq's Saddam Hus-
sein, "the Palestinian people
has no other represent-
ative," Mr. Rocard said at a
news conference after
meeting with President
Bush.
The French position ap-
pears to be at odds with that
of the rest of the European
Community, which confirm-
ed earlier this month that
the E.C. was avoiding any
contact with the PLO.
Mr. Dumas did not reveal
any plans for Arafat to come
to France. The PLO leader
paid an official visit to
France two years ago and
was received by President
Francois Mitterrand in what
was interpreted by many as
a European recognition of
the PLO.
