Le Pen Fined
For Slur

Paris (JTA) — A French
court has imposed a $2,000
fine on Jean-Marie Le Pen,
the leader of the extreme
right-wing National Front,
for insults he made three
years ago about a member of
the French government
which included a slur on gas
chambers.
The court, in the Parisian
suburb of Nanterre, imposed
the fine for remarks Mr. Le
Pen made in September
1988 in which he mockingly
used the last name of Michel
Durafour in conjunction
with the word "crematoire,"
which means crematorium,
or gas chamber.
The word "four" in French
means oven.
He also said Mr. Durafour
was an "imbecile" and con-
temptible. Mr. Le Pen made
his remarks about Mr.
Durafour, a centrist
politican who was at the
time minister in charge of
public service, at a National
Front meeting. They were
made in response to Mr.
Durafour's call for voters to
ensure defeat of the Nation-
al Front, known for its
racism, in an upcoming elec-
tion for Parliament.
The suit against Mr. Le
Pen was brought by the
French government for in-
sulting a member of the
government after the Na-
tional Front leader made his
comments. The justice min-
ister announced the suit,
which was based on a 19th-
century law that is rarely
applied.

All Previous Sales Are Excluded

Britain Opens
Oil Market

London (JTA) — A 12-year-
old rule that excluded Israel
from buying North Sea oil
has finally been revised in
what friends of Israel con-
sider a reward for the re-
straint it showed under Iraqi
missile attack.
Energy Secretary John
Wakeham told the House of
Commons that the
guidelines which govern the
destination of crude oil ex-
ports from the United
Kingdom are to be
withdrawn immediately,
with the only remaining ex-
ception being South Africa.
Although the government
has always denied there was
a ban on British oil sales to
Israel, that was the effect of
the energy guidelines in-
troduced in 1979 by Tony
Benn, then secretary of state
for energy.
