The disclosure was the first mention of the device in public by a senior Cabinet member. Israel has launched two experimental com- munications satellites over the past two years. The se- cond was launched last April, a day after Saddam Hussein threatened to destroy half of Israel with chemical weapons. But neither of the satellites possessed intel- ligence capabilities. Opposition politicians have berated the govern- ment for its need during the Gulf war to rely on U.S. satellite data for intelligence about Iraqi Scud missile launchers. Mr. Arens maintained that Israel's intelligence was up to date throughout the Per- sian Gulf crisis. He said that he had in fact relayed infor- mation to U.S. Defense Sec- retary Dick Cheney before the Gulf war began on Jan. 17. The Knesset Foreign Af- fairs and Defense Com- mittee decided nevertheless to establish a subcommittee to study the functioning of the intelligence community during the recent hostilities. Most of the casualties were the result of road accidents and drownings. Damage to electricity and telephone lines and highways was estimated at millions of dollars. The storm struck after a week of mild, summerlike weather. Six died in highway ac- cidents and more than 90 were injured, 20 seriously, as vehicles skidded on rainslick pavements. The downpour dropped 2 inches of rain in the Tel Aviv area and nearly 5 inches in northern Israel in a 24 hour period. But it did little to relieve the drought condi- tions caused by three suc- cessive dry winters. ♦ By purchasing the entire High How ♦ Point and factory showrooms of this innovative manufacturer of glass, and taking immediate delivery, we were able to negotiate a substantial discount.
