To all our friends and family HAPPY PASSOVER Prague (JTA) — A group of Czechoslovak photographers is carrying out an ambitious project: making a photographic record of Jew- ish sites throughout the country. "I don't know if we will be able to photograph all sites," Pavel Jasansky, a founder of the Signum photographers group, said in an interview. "We are working on Bohemia and Moravia now, but we would also like to do Slovakia." The six Signum photogra- phers have already taken thousands of pictures of Jew- ish cemeteries and some synagogues. A selection of the highly evocative pictures — many showing in detail desecra- tion, vandalism and indif- ference — was shown in an exhibition in Prague in January. More pictures, as well as pictures of Polish Jewish cemeteries by Polish photographer Monika Kra- jewska, are to be exhibited this fall at the Polish Cultural Center in Prague. Signum hopes to have ex- hibits of the photographs in Israel, Canada and the United States. Mr. Jasansky said the photographs will be published later this year in a book, Jews in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, due to come out in Czech, Ger- man, English and Hebrew. The deadline for pictures for the book is this June. The book will be about 200 pages long, with most photographs in black and white and a few in color. The book will also include "a sort of oral documenta- tion, quoting people we talk- ed to when we photographed the cemeteries, their memories, etc.," Mr. Jasan- sky said. The majority of the Signum team is Jewish. "We got together as a group of photographers documenting the revolution here" in 1989, Mr. Jasansky said. "We decided we wanted to work together on major projects," including "something deeper," he said. Once work on documen- ting Czechoslovak Jewish sites is finished, he said, the group hopes to go to Israel to photograph Czechoslovak Jews living there. OF LONE PINE IN CROSSWINDS 855-0480 Paris (JTA) — Pandemonium broke out in the Paris Court of Justice last week where Holocaust revisionist Robert Faurisson is being sued for falsifying history and inciting racial hatred. The self-styled historian, who is in fact a lecturer in literature, drew shouts of "liar" and "bastard" from spectators when he claimed that gas chambers never ex- isted. Fistfights broke out. A man shouted that his whole family had been gassed and demanded to testify. He was removed by order of the judge. Mr. Faurisson is being sued by several organiza- tions of wartime deportees because of an interview published in an extreme right-wing monthly last September. He contended in it that the gas chambers were used for "disinfection" and that the Final Solution, the Nazi plan to exterminate Jews, Gypsies and other minorities, did not exist. The plaintiffs charged Mr. Faurisson was using the court as a forum to pro- pagate his views. They walked out when the judge ruled he had the right to state his case. Mr. Faurisson wrote the foreword to the "Leuchter Report," a revisionist polemic written by Fred Leuchter, a Boston-area man on trial in Massachusetts for practicing engineering without a license. Mr. Leuchter, whose busi- ness is selling execution machinery, including gas chambers, to states that practice capital punishment, was commissioned to visit certain death camp sites and write a report in support of Ernst Zundel, a German- born Canadian convicted in 1988 for spreading "false news." Mr. Leuchter concurred with Mr. Zundel that gas chambers did not exist. Despite repeated proof that his conclusions were nonsense, Mr. Leuchter's report has been circulated in several countries.
