RETRO SIXTIES

all-white outfits or as a calming accent
to the hot neons.

Glittery Nights
Evening outfits glitter and shine.
Rhinestones are passe but sequins
are everywhere, from all-sequined slip
dresses to all-sequined tops and short
snug skirts. Other sparkly enhance-
ments are paillettes, beading and
colorful faux stones.
In glittery fabrics, lame blouses are
standbys but the real news is gold and
silver lurex sweaters and cardigans.
Often, they're bulky, and intended to
be worn over black leggings or a
black catsuit. Or you can reverse the
look — wear gold lurex leggings
under a long black top.
Gold and silver give maximum
shine. Black is always popular. But
there are other colors, like red and
hot pink. You can glitter from head
to toe, including shiny hosiery and
metallic leather shoes, or add just a
touch of glitz.
While you can take your sequins
serious and sexy, there is also a
playful approach to glittery evening-
wear. For instance, you could team a
short, shimmering off-the-shoulder
sweater with skintight jeans, as the
DKNY line does. Or wear sequined
accessories — bike bags, baseball
caps, even high-top sneakers — for a
youthful street-wise aesthetic.

Accessory Savvy
If you want to be fashion forward,
wear leggings. Wear them with just a
long sweater or a cropped top, if
you've got the courage. If not, wear
them under a skirt.
To the delight of legwear manufac-
turers, leggings (a.k.a. tights) are
having their hottest year ever. All the
designers showed them, and there
are innumerable variations, from
footed to footless, from capri-length
to stirrup-style.
You can get them in solid opaque
colors and subtle textures but why
not go whole-hog? There are stretch
velvet leggings, lacy leggings, tie-dye
leggings, Pucci-patterned leggings,
animal-print leggings, polka dot and
stripe leggings, floral leggings,
astronomy print leggings.
Colors can be bright (blues and
greens are popular) and/or graphic-

ally bold. Or they can be the dusty
pastels (bleached coral, seafoam
green, blue smoke). White is making
a strong showing, both as a back-
ground for prints and as a solid color.
Floral leggings are especially direc-
tional in capri length with lace edging.
Another au courant accessory is the
structured handbag, particularly
when it's small and in a vibrant color.
These bags come in a variety of ma-
terials, from leather to lizard for day,
from satin to toile for evening. Most
have hand-held handles but a few can
be slung over a shoulder.
An alternative to the small, struc-
tured bag is the roomy tote bag. It is
shown in canvas and linen with (real
or fake) leather trim as well as in

calfskin. White and florals are most
directional.
In jewelry, large button earrings and
small drop earrings are the favorites.
Long, shoulder-duster earrings are for
evening only or, better yet, put away
entirely until the fashion pendulum
swings back. Matte silver is big this
spring, and looks especially good
against clear, bright colors. Also big
are whimsical pins, cuff or bangle
bracelets, and short, chunky neck-
laces. The best are multiple-strands
of beads or pearls; pink pearls are the
newest.
Gloves and wide headbands are
back, thanks to the Sixties influence.
Look for short cotton gloves in solids
and psychedelic prints.

Local Flavor

■ BY CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ

If American women are returning to
the Sixties, will Detroiters be left
behind? No way! Local stores report
the following trends for spring:
• At Don Thomas Sporthaus,
buyer Carolyn Bohn suggests the
fashion forward looks from designer
Adrienne Vittadini. The handknit
sweaters have a botanical theme with
bright fresh flowers and garden
scenes. One has the names of the
seasons on it.
