critical that it be maintained daily to
counteract windy beaches, hot sun,
and salt water. Try the following tips
to keep tresses in tip-top shape.
This summer, sexy short hair is
definitely chic. The difference is
longer internal layers that create a
softer, more feminine look. If you're
not ready for a short style, try a
classic "bob” — its easy maintenance
and versatile styling makes it the
perfect choice for those wishing to
update a one-length cut.
Wearing a swimming cap in the
summer is a great way to protect hair
from chlorine. But sometimes, hair
still manages to get wet. What's the
best means of protection to avoid
excess damage?
Hair tends to absorb whatever it's
immersed in (i.e. chlorine and salt
water). Before putting on a swim cap,
saturate hair with fresh water. Im-
mediately after swimming, rinse again
with cool water and apply a condi-
tioner.
After a weekend at the beach, hair
can become dull, brittle, and hard to
control. What's the best way to keep
it healthy and shiny?
Shiny hair is all a matter of light
reflection, and the smoother the
surface, the more shine there is. To
achieve this smooth top coat, it's
essential that the hair cuticles are
closed tightly. Sun, swimming, and
overuse of styling products — like
mousse and hairspray — all contrib-
ute to lackluster hair.
Use your time at the beach for a
natural conditioning treatment. Spritz
hair with a water soluble conditioner
that contains a PABA sunscreen. The
heat will allow it to penetrate the hair
shaft and provide deep conditioning.
After coming home, it's advisable to
wash and condition hair again.
For those who've added
highlights for a sun-streaked
appearance, follow these tips to
ensure they last:
Protect hair from bright sunlight,
chlorine, and salt water. All these
diminish the shine of highlights. Look
for a shampoo that is especially for-
mulated for color-treated hair, and
more importantly, make sure your
shampoo contains PABA sunscreen to
shield your hair from the sun's rays. H
