The exclusivity of the luxury watch- es adds to their appeal. Mr. Schubot offers a $140,000 Genta complete with chimes and an open back so the movements — all of which are hand- carved — are visible. The watch is one of only two that were sent to the United States. A typical Patek Philippe model is the result of two years of research and development, nine months of manufacturing, and 600 hours of quality control. The more compli- cated models can take as many as six years to produce. Each craftsman who works on a Patek Philippe has completed at least five years of watch- making school. The good news is that you don't have to spend a fortune, relatively speaking, to own a top-of-the-line timepiece. A Patek Philippe with a plain face, Roman numeral dial, grosgrain edge and leather strap is a best seller at $7,600, according to Mr. Schubot. Then again, if the outer limits are more your preference, you won't have a problem there either, he assures. "There are watches for up to a million" — at that level, most are encrusted with diamonds. For the true one-of-a-kind collector, Blancpain has created a set of watch- es — one watch with all seven major functions (ie, moon phase, stopwatch, weighted balance, etc.), and seven other watches, each with one individual different function — that sells for $832,000. And, for a piece de resistance time- piece, in honor of its 150th anniversary Patek Philippe has created a 31-function watch that took 10 years to build and can provide such information as on what date Easter falls in the year 2100. The price? Three million dollars. If the cost of owning a luxury watch makes you gulp, think craftsmanship, think exclusivity. If you eliminate the money factor — which, admittedly, is hard to do at these prices, then the mega-expensive watches should appeal to everyone. For a man who wants to make a statement, a luxury watch is it.
