Own A ALL UNDER ONE ROOF Piece of History! Print Collection From Alma "Alma College Collection: A Decade of Michigan Print- making" will be shown at the Detroit Institute of Arts through May 5. It is the 14th exhibition in the DIA's Michigan Artists Program. The event also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Alma College Statewide Print Competition. A selection of 40 prints done by Michigan artists during the 1980s will offer examples of all the major printmaking techniques: woodcut, engrav- ing, etching and lithography. Among the artist print- makers represented are Bruce Thayer (Mason); Paul Stewart, Carla Jimison, Takeshi Takahara (Ann Ar- bor); David Bigelow (Flint); Jim Nawara, Stanley Louis Rosenthal (Detroit); Elizabeth Daly, Margaret Meade- Turnbull (Lansing); D.K. Semivan (Royal Oak); Kim Bauer, Charles Palmer, Michael Thomas (Ypsilanti); Sandra Rice (Belleville), Stephen Schousen (Grand Rapids), Catherine S. Graves (Canton), Carolyn Swift Ar- mitage (Harper Woods). Impressions were printed by the artists themselves, as opposed to atelier or contract prints done by a printer in collaboration with an artist. In this way, the prints are more personal. In 1981, Alma College in- itiated its annual statewide print competition to call at- tention to the high quality of printmaking being done in Michigan, and to give greater exposure to artists working in the medium. Jurors for the competition are nationally- known artist/printmakers. The resulting annual show is circulated by Alma College to six or seven small museums and galleries around the state. Award winning-prints enter the permanent Alma College collection which now numbers nearly 100 works by Michigan artists. The collec- tion has gained recognition as a documentation of the creativity and technical skill of Michigan artist/print- makers. The exhibition is made possible by the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan and the Founders Society. Chris Swenson, associate curator of Graphic Arts, will discuss the Alma Collection 3 p.m. March 24 in the gallery. The Alma College Collec- tion will be free to the public during regular museum hours 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Wed.-Sun.; closed Mon., Tues., and holidays.
