he says by contrast. "In
Israel, where everything is
open season, there are jokes
that would give many
American Jews heart at-
tacks."
A final joke instructs, Mr.
Waldoks explains to his au-
dience, that "when you
marry, you don't marry
another person. You marry an
entourage. You marry people
you'd never associate with in
your life."
In turn-of-the-century
Russia, two yeshiva students,
ages 11 and 14, are betroth-
ed to the Jewish daughters of
two rich Jewish businessmen
in a far-away town.
While on the train to meet
their intendeds, one of the
boys realizes they are heading
into an unknown future and
jumps off the train to save
himself. This leaves the other
boy to be greeted by two pro-
spective families of in-laws at
the end of the line.
Once off the train, the boy
is nearly torn in two by the
future mothers-in-law, each of
whom wants the remaining
scholar for her daughter.
This Solomonic problem is
taken to the rabbi who
withdraws to ponder the
situation.
After a week, he summons
the two families to his study.
"I have come to a decision,"
he says. "We will cut the
young boy in half."
One mother-in-law drops to
the floor in horror. "How
could you do that to this
child?" she chides the rabbi.
But the other woman re-
tains her composure. "Cut the
boy in half," she declares.
"Aha!" the rabbi shouts to
the second woman. "You must
be the real mother-in-law." ❑
