Memories

I sell memories, yes sir,
memories,
red-hot memories.

which won the championship
game over Duke by 40. This
year, we won at Ball State,
which was one of only four
games they've lost at home in
two years."
Braun, still single, has an
inside-outside combination of
seniors Marcus Kennedy, 6-7,
and guard Lorenzo Neely.
EMU has been rated in the
top 40 all year and the MAC
has been rated the 12th
strongest conference in the
college ranks.
Although Arrow may not
have a "stud" this year, he's
had his share in the past,
mainly at San Jacinto Junior
College, where in ten years he
had an amazing record of 302
wins, 43 losses, 10 state
championships and three na-
tional championships. His
players included future NBA
players Walter Berry, Alton
Lister, Ladell Eackles, Larry
Spriggs and Boo Harvey.
"There!" he admitted, "you
spent more time motivating
them to succeed in the
classroom than you did
motivating them to play well.
If they missed a class, I had
them running at 6 a.m. the
next morning. We also had
mandatory study hall twice a
week. Most of them were de-
cent students (21 of 22
graduated during my last five
years) but had been allowed to
get away with doing hardly
any work in high school!'
Arrow has nation-wide con-
tacts and says he gets players
from New York, Baltimore,
and the Washington, D.C.,
area "because they want to
avoid that white stuff that
falls in the winter. This is a
beautiful place and we have
as pretty a beach, 40 minutes
away, as you could find
anyplace in Hawaii!'
At Houston's Jones High,
Arrow was all-city and all-
state and led his team to a
state championship in 1965,
averaging 15 points per game.
He was recruited by
Southwest Texas State in San
Marcus — "too small even to
have a temple, let alone a
Hillel chapter" he recalled —
and was twice a Lone Star
Conference all-star.
"I started off as a business
major but midway I switched
to a business minor and a
physical education major," he
continued. If there was an
earlier influence that led him
to the precarious profession of
college coaching, it was his
mother: Betty Arrow has
been secretary to the exeuc-
tive director of the Houston
Jewish Center for 33 years.
"I learned to play all the
sports there, and when I grew
older I was there from 8
a.m.-5 p.m. every day working
with the younger kids." ❑

I sell Wrigley Field on
lazy afternoons,
the House that Ruth built,
bats cracking,
thump of flesh and bone
in well-worn leather,
scuffles and fistfights,

chalk and dirt on clean,
white thighs,
fathers and sons on hard,
green seats,
sharing a dog and suds.

Pick it up, boy,
hold it in your hand.
That's the American
dream right there,
that piece of cardboard.
Hold it to your ear.
Why, I can hear that old
ballpark organ,
can't you?

I sell memories, yes sir,
memories,
get your red-hot
memories here.
