The Hebrew word sherut means service. Project Sherut provides
in-kind goods and services to community service organizations. Each
week, we will publish requests for needed items.
Persons interested in helping to meet these needs should
contact Miriam lmerman at The Jewish Community Council at
962-1880. Also, organizations or groups in need of in-kind
services should contact The Jewish Community Council.

DESK. National Council on
Alcoholism and Other De-
pendencies — BABES Acad-
emy/Day Care Center, in
addition to provision of child
care services, conducts a pro-
gram where substance abuse
prevention is emphasized.
BABES Academy needs toys
for preschool ages, cots, clay,
easels, a record player, small
file cabinets, tables and a
desk.

PHONE, ETC. Downriver
Recycling Center was
established in response to the
need for alternatives to total
disposal in landfills. The center
provides collection and drop-

off programs, and has become
increasingly involved in educa-
tion. Downriver Recycling
Center needs an electric
typewriter, an IBM or Apple II
compatible computer and
printer, file drawers, a touch-
tone phone, a slide projector,
a desk and chair, a copying
machine, a video recorder and
a television.

COMPUTER PAPER, FILE
PAPER, NOTEBOOKS, PENS,
PAPER, ENVELOPES, IN-
KIND DONATIONS. The Heat
and Warmth Fund (THAW) is a
last-resort fund to assist
families and individuals with
energy bills who are in danger
of shut off. THAW needs corn-
puter paper, file paper,
notebooks, pens, paper,
envelopes and in-kind dona-
tions of printing and postage
plus refreshments for
meetings.

This weekly feature highlights some organizations in the Jewish and
general communities that rely on volunteers. Opportunities for a
nearly limitless range of volunteers will be highlighted.

REACT (Radio Emergency
Associated Communications
Teams) is an international
public service organization
dedicated to serving the public
through the use of C.B. radio
communications. The group
monitors C.B. channel 9 for
motorists and boater distress
calls. Other emergency corn-
munications include Skywarn
(tornados), special events and
Operation CARE safety breaks
(Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor
Day).
Volunteers are needed for all
of the above services.
Especially needed are people
to monitor channel 9, listening
for information on stranded
motorists and boaters.

The Family to Family program. a joint project of the National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women and Women's Division of the Jewish Welfare
Federation. has been successful in connecting many families in the
Detroit area with Soviet Jewish newcomers. We have a special need

Estimated time commitment:

After a required day-long train-
ing class, volunteers work for
10 hours under direct supervi-
sion, then 25 hours under in-
direct supervision. For active
membership, a minimum of 6
hours of monitoring per month
is required, but greater par-
ticipation is encouraged.

World Medical Relief carries
out dual programs: collecting
medical supplies, equipment
and pharmaceuticals and pro-
viding these to the needy, both
locally and abroad. The
Prescription Program provides
medication on an ongoing
basis for tri-county area
seniors who would not other-
wise be able to obtain them.
WMR annually fills over 24,000
of these prescriptions and
distributes them through a net-
work of cooperative agencies,
churches, social work depart-
ments and senior centers.
Volunteers are needed to
assist in all areas of operation.
They will sort supplies as

received, assist in the phar-
macy, pack orders and pick up
donations from area offices, as
well as assisting with general
office work. Especially needed
are persons with medical
knowledge who can assist in
the identification of equipment
or instruments and the repair
of equipment.

Estimated time commitment:

Many volunteers work 4 hours
per week; others work 4 hours
per month. There are no
minimum requirements — any
amount of time is appreciated.

Community Services
of Oakland

CSO is a United Way sup-
ported agency offering a varie-
ty of programs to clients of all
ages, from birth to death. Its
goals are to promote the
healthy adjustment of in-
dividuals, families and corn-
munities. The primary current
services are Family Services,
Senior Services and Com-
munity Programs. CSO also of-
fers individual and group
counseling services, direct
assistance for basic needs to
individuals and families, and
workshops and seminars on a
wide range of topics.
Volunteers are needed to
pick up Focus: HOPE food
boxes at CSO and delivery
them to homebound seniors
who are unable to get to the
agency. The delivery area is
Southeast Oakland County
(Madison Heights, Ferndale,
Hazel Park, Royal Oak, Oak
Park and Berkley).
Skills needed: Must have
own transportation and be able
to lift boxes weighing approx-
imately 40 lbs.

Estimated time commitment:

Food box distribution takes
place on the third Saturday of
each month, from 10 a.m. to 1
p.m.

Since Israel was founded in 1948, American Jews have been at the ready, going to Israel at times of need as human ser-
vice volunteers. We went during the '67 war. We went during the Yom Kippur war. Now, Israel needs us again. If you can
