case from the communities.
It's hard to tell where the
grass-roots is on this one."
(The committee has been
asked to join Mr. Lasson's
amicus brief, but so far is on
record as only giving its
support to "full, open and
fair hearings, before ap-
propriate tribunals" concer-
ning Mr. Pollard's legal
claims.)
Pollard supporters — some
of whom regard Mr. Pollard
as a modern Jewish hero
who put Israel's survival
above his personal safety —
also speak with increasing
fervor about the possibility
that the Bush administra-
tion might be inclined to
release Mr. Pollard and
allow him to settle in Israel.
They base this view on
perceived closer ties between
the White House and
Jerusalem resulting from
the Gulf war and on increas-
ed activity on his behalf in
Israel.
Last week, Israeli Deputy
Foreign Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu said that
Jerusalem was working to
secure Mr. Pollard's release,
and Israeli newspapers re-
ported that President Chaim
Herzog and the prime min-
ister's office had asked Pres-
ident Bush to grant exec-
utive clemency.
Mr. Netanyahu, who gave
no details of his nation's
efforts, also said he received
word that Mr. Pollard's
mental and physical condi-
tions were steadily de-
teriorating. (Newsweek re-
ported this week that "well-
placed U.S. sources" think
Israel may fear Mr. Pollard
will finger Israeli contacts if
he feels Jerusalem has
abandoned him.)
However, well-placed
American Jewish leaders
say they see no evidence of
any such deal.
Thomas Dine, executive
director of the American
Israel Public Affairs Com-
mittee, speaking last Sun-
day at his group's annual
national conference, said he
did not think the Pollard
case "will be affected by the
new relationship" between
the U.S. and Israel after the
Gulf war.
"Nobody seems to know
what will break this case.
None of us knows when and
how" the Pollard affair will
end, Mr. Dine said.
The Pollard camp has been
at odds with the organized
community leadership ever
since Mr. Pollard's arrest,
arguing that the groups
have conspired to avoid the
issue out of fear that Ameri-
can Jews' patriotism will be
put under a cloud.
