David Gad-Harf, executive
director of the Jewish Com-
munity Council, said, "I
sense the situation is com-
pletely different than in
previous eras. In the after-
math of the Persian Gulf
war, the United States has
established a new relation-
ship with Arab nations."
This presents the United
States with new oppor-
tunities to have leverage
with Arab leaders, par-
ticularly Saudi Arabia,
Syria and Jordan, Mr. Gad-
Harf said.
The situations in 1967 and
1973 followed Israeli vic-
tories over Arab states, he
said. "In this conflict, Israel
was a silent partner. This
makes it a much more oppor-
tune time for a settlement."
The other change is the
Bush administration's more
pragmatic approach to set-
tlement, Mr. Gad-Harf said.
He hears American officials
saying the United States can
not force peace on the Middle
East nations.
The U.S. has no specific
peace plan it is trying to sell,
he said. United States offi-
cials aren't doing much more
than listening.
"There is a window of op-
portunity that may be very,
very brief," he said.
But with the long-standing
conflict between Arab and
Jew in the Middle East and
the continued demand that
Israel withdraw from the
territories before going to
the negotiating table, he
finds much skepticism
within the Jewish commun-
ity whether there will be any
real progress, Mr. Gad-Harf
said.
"Within the Jewish com-
munity I sense a feeling that
nothing new is coming out of
the Arabs," he said. 0

Father Musial and Rabbi
Klenicki, who both spoke at
Temple Beth El on Tuesday,
said the Catholic Church is
pioneering an effort that will
influence the understanding
of Jews and Judaism in
Polish Catholicism.
They cited as their main
source a pastoral letter
issued in January by the
Polish Bishops' Conference
that attempts to dispel cen-
tury-old anti-Jewish feelings
and prejudices.
The letter, which was
issued on the occasion of the
25th anniversary of the Vat-
ican II document on Judaism
