FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 1991
Why this preoccupation —
and Bonnie isn't the only one
— with money? If I couldn't
hold a job, then I could
understand her position. But,
I don't make enough money?
Would she go out with me if
I won the lottery? Whatever
happened to loving a person
for who he is? Is he kind? Is
he generous? Is he con-
siderate to others? Aren't
those questions more
important?
I was attracted to Bonnie
because — and here my own
prejudices come through —
she was a teacher, a dedicated
and compassionate one who I
thought was willing to see
children for what they are,
and not be concerned with the
size of their parents' bank
account.
This episode has left me
disappointed, but not
pessimistic. If anything, I'm a
bit relieved. I might have got-
ten involved with a woman
whose values were so
diametrically opposed to
mine. Her honest comment
saved me much time and ag-
gravation. I'm confident I'll
meet a wonderful woman
some day.
Until then, I'll hold onto
the mailman outfit. ❑

Alma PIIIRCHASIERS
you weren't home. However, I
did have a nice chat with your
father, and I decided to take
him out for dinner and danc-
ing this weekend. I hope
you're not jealous."
A week went by and I didn't
hear from her. Finally, I
received news from one of the
matchmakers. At the
Christmas party, Bonnie was
spotted snuggling with her
date. She later dismissed him
as "just OK, there's nothing
there," but later she brighten-
ed, "but, he's driving a
BMW"
The colleague somehow
maneuvered my name into
the conversation. "Oh, I could
never date a teacher," she
said, but declined to give a
reason. When pressed, she
finally blurted out, "Teachers
don't make enough money."
So, that was the reason! I
couldn't believe it. I had
heard so many wonderful
things about this woman.
How kind she was. How she
never spoke badly of anyone.
How loving she was with her
students. Yet, she dismisses
me because I don't make
enough money!
I was stunned. If she was
half as nice as everyone said
she was and lived in a tent, I
couldn't have cared less.
