Local Columnist W hen Charley Mar- cuse, age 9, of Hun- tington Woods, isn't attending Burton Elemen- tary School, he's busy mak- ing and selling pins. If he needs creative help, he asks his mom, Peggy Jo Wise Marcuse, a local artist and ombudsman for Beaumont Hospital. The mother-and-son team recently had a booth at Farmer's Market in Royal Oak selling their wares. Charley sells his American flag pins in the shapes of the different states, and he says that Michigan is a big seller. His pins are actually painted puzzle pieces. Charley has earned $200 selling his patriotic jewelry. He plans to donate some of his earnings to help pay for the costs of the Persian Gulf war. His brother Christopher Mar- cuse is stationed in Saudi Arabia. Charley also creates earr- ings and pins using pine cones, feathers and rhine- stones. "I recycle everything," claims Charley. He does not feel his artistic venture is a hobby. "I just enjoy doing it," he says with a smile. His mom is an accomplish- ed painter and photogra- pher. Years ago Mrs. Mar- cuse owned a store on Hamilton in Detroit and photographed record album covers, including some for recording artist Neil Dia- mond. She is now painting Charley Marcuse with his pin col- lection. shoes that she calls "happy feet." The Marcuse family ar- tistic talent can be viewed and purchased at the gift shop in the Townsend Hotel.
